Implications of Driving with "OD/OFF"?

With the potential exception of poor gas mileage, are there any other implications (i.e. increased wear and tear on components within the engine, etc) in doing city driving with the "OD" in the off position?

I was curious because while in the shop a mechanic noticed that the OD was in the off position and warned me of excessive wear on the engine when driving with it off - even when doing city driving.

FAQ's has a write up on that question. It was interesting. I've started using mine. But now my wife thinks I'm silly using it.

Besides wearing out your 3rd band more, versus the 4th, I think the only implication is having a stupid auto tranny looking for 4th when going 20 mph.

I hate that, and don't like when I'm going 20-30 mph sometimes, and I step on it a lil, and it downshifts from 4th to 3rd. Especially when the car is jerking itself around.

I keep my car in OD off, until I hit the freeway at 60+, sometimes 70+.
