steering arm boot

I had Firestone do an alignment, a wheel balance & rotation, and an oil change about a month ago. Whenever I go over bumps at low speed, I hear a lound CLUNKing noise like something's loose. I've gone over the car and looked at everything and tried most of the connections I could think of, and they all seemed OK.

Last night, however, under the engine, I noticed that the right side steering arm / gear boot was separated close. I couldn't get close to see, but does that boot separate normally? I guess I have to look close at that to see if it's loose.

What I need to know is what is loosened / adjusted during an alignment that might be the culprit here, because if that boot separation is part of it, that's going to be Firestone's a$$ .
