Ok guys i need an answer for this question about weather or not to buy another max but this one for my sister. Currently she has a 02 Ford Escort ZX2 and i really dont like this car. Well my mom wants to get my sister a new car and sell the Ford because she worrys about the Ford. So as my mom was looking in the paper she found a 96 Max GLE beige color with 96k miles on it. Its the orginal owner and he has owned an 88 Max i think and this one and just currently bought an 04 Max. I have not seen this max yet and we are goin to look at it tomm. I will deff check the codes on the car just to see if there is anything wrong with it. The seller is asking $5995 for this car. The only thing is that i would want to get her this max but we just dont know if we could sell her car that fast and we prob wouldnt be able to wait to buy this car b/c it sounds nice and would sell fast. Im just wondering what u think we could prob get this guy down to saying there is nothing wrong with the car b/c we really dont know if we will be able to sell the dang Ford. Just asking for thoughts on this situation thanks guys. Any more ? just ask so i can get the best idea on what to do.

Sorry i just checked the link and thats not working. Its 02 ZX2 with 60k miles 10 disk changer abs premium sound sliding sun roof pwr everything and an auto tranny it said the value was about $6000 under fair condition.

Talk it down to 5500-5000 cash. max's are pretty reliable if well maintained. Get it checked out. Im sure you can sell the escort...not for much but still. if all else fails, donate it and use it as a tax write off.

You should be able to get a decent amount of money for the Escort, it's only an '02! I don't know how many miles it has or what condition it's in, but you should be able to get about $5000 for it.

Moving to a 4th Gen Max is a great idea though...even with more miles, the Maxima will be more comfortable, more luxurious, and more reliable! Good luck to you and your sister!

Well i just got back from looking at it. The max had the 6 disc changer accouple of scratches, the engine made alil bit of a clicking noise, i believe the vin said it was a cali car, i checked the codes and of corse it has a knock sensor failure, the alignment is fine, leather in the car is almost perfect no accidents it really has 97450 miles, the tags say 03 but the inspection tags say 04 so maybe he just had a mechanic slap that sticker on, and the car sounds like its about to bog out at idle cuz the rpms are at like 250-300 and when the car starts it jumps to 700 then jumps down to like the 250-300 range. Well thats the update on the car let me know what u think i should offer. And i think the guy would laugh at me if i said 4500 but i could only wish to get it for that.

I am not one with engines, but RPMs that drop that low mean bad im pretty sure...

This guy is asking 5995 for a car that runs like this? Whatever. I think you'd do yourself a favor if you offer $4500 and tell him to call you. KBB has 5550 as private party price in my zip code for 96 GLE in good condition. Have you done VIN check?

I'd offer $4500 and tell him the car isn't running right and spitting knock sensor code. Leave him your number and also let him know you are actively looking for a vehicle and are looking at others as well.

I'd ask to take it for another spin from cold start. In PA with winter still here, it shouldn't be starting at 700 unless it's already warm. I'd want to drive it for more than 5 minutes from a 100% cold start. Some Trans problems can be hidden if you only drive it warm. Before the trans on my 94 Max went out it drove fine when warm even though when cold it slipped some.

It sounds like you're going to be putting some duckets into it right away to get it running correctly. Add what you're willing to pay to the amount you think you'd have to spend to get it running right, THAT is your real buying price.

Thanks for all the input guys ill call him back cuz he said he was goin to take it to his machinc (spelled wrong) and have if check it out cuz he said that thats never happened b4 and that some1 came by last night and it didnt do that. Also the car was fully warmed up i did notice that. Thanks again for all the input.

What sucks about offering 4500 and just leaving is that you probably won't get it. He'll probably get some sucker through the door and sell for more than what you're offering.

If it has all those problems i wouldnt buy it. You're basically then buying a car that you're goign to have to put more money into to fix. It's not like its the only maxima around you're very likely to find another one in much better condition to buy, just sell teh zx2 and go from there.
