5spd Conversion Complete :)

Well add me to the ranks of 5spd converts. My baby is back on the street and ready to chew up asphalt once the clutch is broken in. Thanks to everyone who helped. Did an engine swap at the same time so she's got a fresh outlook on life. After looking inside the timing cover on the old engine, I noticed a reddish hue instead of a nice oil tone. Looks like she got too hot at some point which is most likely what contributed to ring wear. I stepped up from 5w30 to 10w30 since she's only ran in spring/summer/fall and not in the colder months. I think I just flat got her too hot racing on too low weight of oil the past couple years. Lesson learned.

Will be rebuilding the old engine with a HP forged parts rebuild kit from ROSS so heat is not as much of a factor anymore. Further future plans are DEI CryoSystem, Tokiko Illumina's (paired with my Eibach's) & maybe injectors/2.87 someday when I get bored and have nothing left to do.

Of course, cryo treatement & shot peening of the transmission/gears is on the list to but thats a ways out. I did find a place that would cryo treat the whole engine for $650 though hehehehe *dreaming*

Do you have any advice for breaking in a clutch? I just had mine replaced. How many miles? 500, 1000?

I have been told to baby it 500 miles and to not drag launch it until 1000 miles.

Should Maxs with over 100k be running 10w 30 rather than 5w 30? What is the difference? Thanks

I've noticed a lot greater TQ response more than anything else. It really will put you back in the seat now Other than the clutch being spaztic (new), that's the biggest thing I notice right now.

To be honest, the hardest part was figuring out the wiring needs from the write up. It took a lot of skimming the EL section of the FSM's cuz I sold my A/T prior to this and had nothing to go on. It's really a fairly simple conversion. Just do yourself a favor and can the stock hydraulic lines right off the bat. Just get a pre connectorized length of hydra line and a bender. Will save lots of heartache.

Run 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer is what I've been told. However, since she is retired over the winter months (drive a truck due to snow/freezing) I've no worries about changing em out. Can't believe I kept with 5w30 during the last two summers of racing with track temps exceeding 120 degrees. DOH!!!

wait this oil debate makes no sense, unles your racing on a cold engine which is just dumb than 10w-30 vx 5w-30 is no different

at operating temp there both 30 weight reguardless

I mean make your own custom hydraulic line from the Master Cyl all the way to the rubber hose that feeds the Slave Cyl. That coil and all that stock crap is useless and a PITA to work with.

The NAPA Part# for the pre connectorized line we used is 813-1275. It's 3/16" Brake Line X 51" long and 10mm connectors.
