Drivin Around W/ Cat Off

i just wanted to see how loud the max would sound w/o the cat (actually test pipe) so i did it a few minutes ago and it sounds so freaken loud. i really do hate it and it kinda sounds like a truck. i did experience a whole loss of high end power but how bad is it to be drivin w/ the cat off besides the emission thing.
i'm gonna try to put it back on tomm. just hope a cop doesn't come up next me.

NCSU_MAX 03-15-2005 03:12 PM

i started my car last week with nothing from the headers back before i put my new Y-pipe on - holy crap. it did not sound like a maxima

SonicDust187 03-15-2005 03:12 PM

I drove with only ypipe on and the sound was increadible, loud and mad lowend power loss, but midrange and top end was crazy. Not bad to drive like that.

G4nismo 03-15-2005 03:14 PM

sweet i just didn't wanna screw up anything. it actually sounds decent in the garage.

crazy as in u gained more power?

SonicDust187 03-15-2005 03:34 PM

On the top end I would break traction in 2nd, gained a lot of power ontop but lost a lot in low end and a tad in mid range. You got to try it, I had mustangs and camaro owners pull me over to find out wtf is going on. I even have a video posted online of me driving around. http://www.jatan.net/sonicdust187.wmv

wow is urs a stick or auto? do u have an after market y-pipe?

i still have the piece of shiate stock y-pipe and mines an auto.

SonicDust187 03-15-2005 04:04 PM

5spd with budget ypipe. So its even louder then yours.

Zeus97MAX 03-15-2005 04:08 PM

That sounds pretty crazy, but I def think they put cat converters on the car for a reason. Of course as I always say, its your car, so do what you like!

SonicDust187 03-15-2005 04:10 PM

Oh and the cat dont help, befor that I drove with budget ypipe, stock cat and resonator and it was mad loud and nasty sounding. This way it sounds much better.

NCSU_MAX 03-15-2005 04:26 PM

Zeus - howd your superflo work out?

NmexMAX 03-15-2005 04:33 PM

Emissions and noise is mainly why they're there.

okay i just gotta keep it down near cops until i get my test pipe back on.
i know a friend of mine who has a silverado w/ his cats off and has flowmasters and sounds freaken loud, like somewht close to a hot rod.

Broaner 03-15-2005 07:09 PM

Were you wearing ear plugs to do that "testing"? I couldn't get myself past 3K when I had no catback on. Its earshattering.

maxima_kenny96 03-15-2005 07:52 PM

Im really hoping u mean u replaced ur cat with sumtin...cause when my car was jacked off, and getting her new *** passage (b-pipe) I noticed the cat was ended right where my gas tank was...heat it up enough call me over and we can watch a firework show

i have no clue wht ur talkin about. of course i have something to replace my old cat as i stated in the first post, a racing straight pipe. i dunno about 96's but my cat certainly does not end near my gas tank .

hey i saw ur video which took forever to DL but yeh, it sounds very similiar to mine, while urs is a bit throatier i guess cause that y-pipe.

GodFather 03-15-2005 08:05 PM

WTF? please don't try too much of that stunt! Let the cops catch you doing that, they'll give you a huge ticket: improper equipment, and environmental pollution violations will get you big bucks thrown. be really careful with that stuff man. also the heat coming outta your headers are really hot even at the y section. drive fast enough, you might spit fire sometimes. then heck breaks loose, you might lit up the fuel tank!!! (heating up the fuel tank will increase internal pressure and superheat the gasoline inside)=====DANGER!!!

bigleman 03-15-2005 08:29 PM

i have the budget y, test pipe and my factory rear section, and it isnt loud at all.
i noticed almost no differance when i took the cat off, i still cant here anything over the intake...

2 Da Max 03-15-2005 08:43 PM

does the test pipe sound different from the stock cat? sorry if off topic

G4nismo 03-16-2005 04:23 PM

depends on type. i have the CM built in resonator.

Alright, i got my pipe back on but magically i lost one of my bolt nut. the rear bolts are fastened but up front, theres only one bolt fastened and w/o the gasket cause it produced a very raspy sound b/c the gasket wasn't sealed tight.

so i'm drivin around with my pipe partially opened which still kinda makes a deep tone,
less than w/o a pipe completely. is it okay to run around w/ a gas leak for a while until i get that nut? it can't be worse than drivin w/o a cat.
