I don't think you should try doing that on a public road again. You are not only putting yourself in danger, but you are also putting others in danger as well. This topic has been brought up before, simply use the search option and you'll get your answer and more.

yeah, people! take SmoothMax's advice, do not race on street, it's illegal and dangerous, no matter how well u've modified your car.

To be honest, I've done this before myself, and I'll never do it again. It's scary and extremely costly if you get caught...... I got up to 143 or so on I-25 through Wyoming on my way to Washington. Got a speeding ticket too for two hundred something dollars. Luckily the cop was in a good mood and he said that he clocks people speeding at ridiculous speeds out there on an everyday basis. It's right in the middle of nowhere and I'm rambling on about nothing now so I'll stop here...

Where?

Unfortunately there is nowhere to actually have enough track to see top speed, 1/4 mile to short autocrossing is well slow(but fun). Taladage or Texas speedway would be good but what is the chance of getting to run your max there. I would need a week to get back and forth to say the salt flats. But, I do agree top speed on the highway is dangerous to you and others. There was that time on my Kawasaki 149 -150 but I was young and stupid.

Motortrend

Motortrend got a 96 SE up to 142.1 in a topspeed test they did back in 96 or 97.

Drag limited. If you add more power (has to be significantly more, like with the kinda power you get from a turbocharger, supercharger or NOS), you can get the car to go faster, up above 150. I seriously doubt anyone has seen more than about 155 though.

i did 120 early this morning around 330, running with a camaro ss. i think that 4gens have a limiter at 115 thats why jwt makes a chip, that eliminats govenor and adds like 10 horses. if you get it you have to run 93, basically super whenever you fill up.

While I trust that the car can make it to 140, I don't see how you guys can handle that speed. . . I know I have been up to 130 and it is just scary IMO, and even with fully changed out suspension, I in no way felt it was safe at that speed. . . It would just be too easy to lose it.

The top speed will depend on your model.

GXE w/o C&C is limited to 120
GXE w/ C&C is limited to redline
SE is limited to redline
GLE is limited to redline

I dont know if the maxima is really that much drag limited, but i can be wrong. I just figure that going that fast, your at redline and you cant go anymore.

I know Thomas SX7R has hit 147 and 151 on tape. That is about the fastest i know of.

I saw an indicated 160mph (prolly more like 140 - 155) in an M5 on the Mass Pike. Started accelerating at Springfield exit (exit 6) and slowed just enough to hit Holyoke exit (with the Chicopee exit in between). That was as high as the govenor would let us go (keep in mind its set for 155 but there are ways to trick it).

The car never felt like it would loose traction but if any of you have ever traveled it it's not really that bad, and we were lucky with the cops. Only car on the road was a Ford Fiesta... no problem there .

Would I do it again? No, not on a public road at least. Give me a track where I won't endanger others, I'll floor it until I cant. BTW, I wasnt driving, it was my friend.

peace -matt

I think I read once that once a car is drag limited that it takes like 10 extra hp for every 1mph gain.

The top speed of Gen 4 maxes is drag limitied, not RPM limited. When you're doing 140, you are in 5th gear at something like 5800 RPM, still room to move higher in rpms, but you have reached the point where your engines max power matches the weight and aerodynamic drag of the car.

This is a gross oversimplification. Wind resistance is a combination of drag and frontal area, and increases at the square of the speed. What you have stated is a linear relationship, which does not exist.
