lowest spring/coilover drop possible
lowest spring/coilover drop possible
Im wondering the lowest anyone has ever gotten on springs, either cut springs or coilovers... Im actually thinking about cutting something cause i want to go down as far as i can... does anyone have there car lowered 3+ inches?? any idea on how i can get reallly low?

stock struts with bump stops will yeild about 2.2" drop
if you get 4th gen konis you can cut some off the bottom for another 1" in travel
if you get 3rd gen konis you already gain 2" back since they are shorter. then cut the bottom threads off for more travel.
Right now I have Cunuck Motorsports springs (2.0") and I have MAYBE 1 cm of travel. FUNK DAT. I plan on modding the 3rd gen konis for a much better ride.

With the Tein coilovers I went from about a 4.5 finger gap to a .5 finger gap. I'd say that has to be pretty close to 3". check out the last 2 pics on the second page for the difference:

yea that looks good and all i just want to go real low like maybe around 4

if your looking for a 4" drop and you want a nice ride you need to get coilovers. JIC's & D2's have a 4" drop. I know that D2's run around $1000, and JIC's for the 4th gen. runs around $1800. But if you just want looks and
a "so so" ride get Koni Struts & Shocks and pair them up with Toser aka topspeed Ground Controls. That will run you somewhere near $700. Good Luck.

well guys i want there to be no whel gap at all i know this can be done.. as of right now i am thinking ground controls with my agx's do u think this will be the smartest/cheapest move? I could care less about ride, i just dont want a wheel gap? can fenders be cut? i mean im even willing to cut the trunk out if i need to... i just want to stay away from bags....
also i have 18s with 225/40/18 tires, is this gonan help me or hurt me?

you said you wanted it cheap.
you can buy sprints and struts for 300 shipped from ebay.
cut 2 coils in the rear 1 in the front.
i guarantee you'll have 0 wheel gap.
you might even tuck a little.
oh and your car will ride like ****.
even with GCs lowered all the way, in the front you will still have a tiny bit of gap.
edit: but since you don't care about your ride just cut the stock springs and use the stock struts. sure it would be dangerous but you don't sound like you car about doing a suspension correctly. just cheap and low. so there you go.

what exactly is the danger in doing this?

it's not horrible dangerous on sprints because the springs are extremly stiff to start with...
i plan on cutting one my rear simply because it's a bit uneven...
some guy on here cut his front 1 and rear 2. it looked great but must have ridden like ****. i can't imagine having my front cut...ruff enough.
Good luck.. as low as I was in my sig pic, I have bent and cracked my transmission oil pan, bent the hell out of my cross member, cracked rims etc... now I"m on coilovers and I raised it up a bit. If your going low, dont be cheap and get springs. Get coil overs. The ride in my car is like butter compared to what it was before... I regret my old set up.

1) No wheel travel which means if you hit a bump, the suspension has no where to go therefore your car pogos off a bump causing a momentary loss of control. A pogoing car rolling down the street = ricer.
2) No travel means the car has literally no weight transfer therefore all that energy is transferred directly to the tires which then will give up quickly and cause a loss of control.
3) Super low drops cause super bad suspension geometry. The car's suspension was designed to operate as a certain ride height. Dropping it over 1.5" screws up everything including the camber, caster, toe, operation of you swaybar, and steering.
4) A super low drop screws up brake proportioning. With the lack of weight transfer, the brakes will easily lock up and the ABS may flake out.
Simply put, having little or no wheel travel means your car is a danger to you and the public. Is it really worth turning your car into a ricer pogo stick and potential death trap/death magnet just so that it has no wheelgap?
Even with coil overs, you're not going to get the drop you want if you want any sort of wheel travel. Dropping a Maxima 3.5" on coilovers doesn't mean the there's safe wheel travel. Coilover strut housings are about 1-1.2" shorter than the stock housings. Therefore a coil over setup can go about 1 to 1.2" lower (~2.5-2.7" total drop) than a normal and safe 1.5" drop (H&R and Eibach) while maintaining reasonable wheel travel. On a smooth road course, a 3" coil over drop would probably be okay, but real world public roads, the more wheel travel, the better. For whatever reason, people believe that coilovers somehow have infinite wheel travel. Having at least 1" of upper wheel travel before contacting a 1" bumpstock is needed to maintain reasonable wheel travel.
IMO, you bought the wrong car to drop super low. There's a reason the 4th gen Maxima rides so high, it's because the car already has limited wheel travel for stock therefore the wheel gaps are rather large. As for cutting your trunk for more of a drop, you really can't serious. The rear beam has trailing arms and center linkage which would also have to be relocated if you were to somehow raise the rear strut body perches.
On my Maxima with H&Rs (1.5" drop), I had 4.2" clearance between the cross member and the ground. With me in the car, that clearance shrunk to 3.8". With a 3" drop, you're talking about 2.3" clearance between the device that mounts your motor and tranny. That ain't squat.
Just a reminder, the Dangers of cutting springs:

That is some good info Dave B.
To get the look you want JOn as I have told you before you are going to want coilovers. D2s or JIC FLT-A2 are your best options becuase of the adjustable suspension travel, but the JICs are lots of $.
I don't know anything about a unibody drop but that may also be an option to get your car a little lower.
A dollar.

3) im already dropped 2" and i have no sway bar....
4) i dont have ABS
okay so i think i can be okay with 1 cut coil in the front and 2 in the back?
of course i dont want my car to break, but i think i should be able to go more than just a 2" drop... cutting 1 coil will bring me down how much lower?
I still think im going to try this sometime soon, i think if i drive carefully, ill be allright until i can buy soem D2's...
opinions??
