It's your vent control valve on the EVAP canister.... check the hoses back there and see if there's any cracks, leaks, or clogs. There's plenty of other possible solutions, but this is a common one.

The code is UNDEFINED according to this: http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecudecoder.html . Check again. Also, try resetting the ECU to see if it comes back. If another code shows, use the decoder.

I have the same code

I have knock ghost and 0309 for EVAP canister, reading the stickies it does say what it is.

Possible causes are what was mentioned before, and I believe my case might be electrical, because it comes and goes (seemingly with very bad weather... if it's wet for a few days in a row and I drive a lot it will come on, and wont go away for awhile until it's been dry awhile.)

Haven't nailed down the real cause yet.

As of right now, it is off and hasn't been on for almost a month now ... even through the last snow storm (this is after I fiddled with the connections etc when my car was on a lift getting new exhaust. also, maybe the new exhaust helped?)

Got it. BTW, its not a ghost code if it shows with another code. If the KS code shows by itself, its called ghost code because it doesn't set off the CEL.

i looked under the car next to charcoal box..there's a lot of sand and salt in there..I'm thinking of washing that whole area off and checking all the hoses..etc..not sure what exactly else I can do.

The 0309 code means the vent control valve is stuck open (its brother code is 0903, means stuck closed).

The causes: Well, it can be water/rain related - the canister can get what the FSM call "saturated," meaning it gets completely soaked on the inside and cannot function properly. The FSM lists other possible causes (some of which can be causing the saturation), including the valve itself is busted; a problem with the EVAP control system pressure sensor; the previously mentioned blockage in a connecting hose; a busted/loose water separator; or a problematic vacuum cut valve.

Here's a crappy pic of the situation under there:

The bigger red arrow is noting the vent control valve in general. The two smaller arrows note the screws holding it in.

So to solve the 0309 problem as well as the 0705 code, i should take it step by step or is there a faster way of pinpointing the problem and fixing it? In the FSM it seems they have a computer hookup to diagnose the problem, but that looks very expensive.

Yea, the dealer has all that fancy equipment. If you figure out a faster way to pinpoint it than by trial and error, let me know

Whoever quoted me, I know, I've got two codes, the KS code (which is a ghost) and the EVAP 0309 that triggers my CEL.

As I mentioned, when I had this, it seemed that when it fiddled (and by fiddled I mean cleaned up all the hoses of all debris, removed and reconnected all connections) and since then, my CEL has not come back on. Previously it would go off/on in intervals roughly a week long or so (both off and on for a week,) and now it's been almost a month with no CEL.

With no smoke machine there's not much way to pinpoint it. Pretty much every one I've ever seen with a Vent Control Valve code needs a vent control valve, a canister, and the canister o-ring.
