97 max overheating

Hi, my 97 overheats everyday if i drive for more than 10 minutes. When i see the temp. needle moving up, i'll turn on the heater and it will go back down again. The radiator is filled to the top with antifreeze,so its no that. What do you think the problem could be? Thanks

If your fans don't come on, do a radiator flush. I had a stanza that did that, it would overheat and it wasn't the thermostat, the fans wouldn't come on. Did a radiator flush and buu bye overheating. Good luck.

that doesnt make any sense. the coolant condition really has nothing to do w/ the fans...only the coolant temp.

1. drive the car...if it starts to get hot, pull over and pop the hood. grab the hose on the drivers side of the engine. the one that runs from the radiator to the coolant pipe. is it hot? if not you probaly need a thermostat. if it is hot go too step 2 (it should be really hot if the temp gause is really high...not just warm)

2. let the car idle w/ the heat off and let the car start to overheat alittle. are the fans on? if yes...you probaly got a bad headgasket. if no then you got a fan problem. check the relays. do the fans come on when you turn the A/C on? they should.

Sounds like thermostat sticking or fans not working

lets see - you drive this car every day and let it overheat? ok! good luck....
do above and see

SMF

if the rad. is full and you turn on the heater and there is pressure then what can it be.
1. the fans
2. what turns on the fan's - thermal switch

are the fans running when you pull over...?
let us know please - good luck

You flush first, what bad is it if this is the first time the coolant has ever been changed? It is a 97. You flush because all components can be good and the car can still overheat, this can happen because of blockage in the cooling system, eg. radiator. You go the least expensive route to diagnose this first.
1. turn on a/c, if both fans come on relay is good, flush system.
2. after system flush if it still overheats change thermostat.
3. test coolant temperature sensor (tells ecu to turn fans on)
4. if it still overheats check/change water pump.

If only condensor fan (passenger side) fan comes on when you turn on the a/c, check relay with ohm meter, if relay test good, disconnect fan jack and check continuity between the winding (2 wires for each side og the fan) This should narrow it down. You have serious problems if there is water in the oil and vice versa, or get white smoke out of the exhaust.
