97 Automatic folks?

Do you have to come to a complete stop (pretty much) for it to down shift into first gear?
If I just kinda "roll" through a stop sign, or light....it will stay in second gear.
Just wondering if I am the only one. Other than that....it runs SWEEEEET!

You are not the only one - that is normal.

noo do not do this. i heard its okay to shift up, from 1-2-drive but its very bad for the tranny to shift manually down.

Its only bad for the autotrans clutches if you down shift at high RPM as the clutches heat up and eventually burn out, if you rev match when you down shift its not bad, and no different from the car doing it its self when you coast.

I have a 96 se and I deliver pizza full time and it is really hard to roll stop signs with our trannies. I have figured out that it isn't stuck in second, it is actually staying in third not second. Just put your shifter in second and then you can roll through any stop without it clunking into gear. This way when you slow down but don't stop all the way and hit the gas the car will be locked solid into second instead of being in third and then dropping into second and making that awfull sound.

Why would your question only apply to '97 owners??

This isn't just coming to a stop that annoys me. When you want the extra power and floor the throttle, sometimes the transmission still refuses to downshift. This isn't just a Maxima problem, it's a Nissan problem.

My friend's dad's Infiniti G20 had the same problem where it just didn't like to downshift. The only difference was that the G20 had a peaky SR20 so it had no ***** under 4k. Be thankful you have a V6.

People with grounding kits have claimed that it was reduced dramatically.

It's one of those things that I just deal with. I only have a handful of complaints about the Max, so I just deal with the ones that I have.
