Maybe ECU upgrade?

And I'm talking NA modfications under say $1000.

Thanks!

00 VI; $100 for the upper manifold, fabricate a couple of adapters, $50 for an RPM switch and you gain gobs of top end power.

Intake
You have to get the car to breath all the way through. Finish up the exhaust with a 2.5" maybe.

eh, I think that Cat back and intake HP gains are fairly negligible/vary. That's why I'm thinking ECU.

ECU is one of my favorite mods. From a performance standpoint, this is my ranking of my performance mods:

1. Y-pipe
2. ECU
3. 00 VI
4. GReddy SP2
5. Intake

ECU outranks the VI because the gains are throughout the powerband and it was plug-n-play.

WHAT!

thats all there is to installing a 00VI manifold? I know there is a lot of testing but price wise thats it? Wow I might have to do some research.

my vote would go to 00vi also, from the reviews, it seems to be very nice for topend, and if you get an ecu upgrade w/ extended rev limiter, it makes the VI even better.

i didnt know that was all that is needed, i thought you would need the bottom half of the manifold too or some minor work to have it fit the TB or somethin.

Yea. not quite sure about the difficulty level rating for a novice like myself. That's why I was sorta thinking ECU upgrade. It's plug and play pretty much.

00 vi and MEVI seem to give the same results UP TOP, but it's what the 00vi gives under the curve that makes it so much more appealing, and it looks much better too, couple that with an ecu upgrade and you're knocking on $1k door ... Only thing is, the 00vi doesn't need an extended rev limiter to give OVERALL (average) gains over the USIM, but will be much better accented with a ~7k limit.

after y pipe, i'd say exhaust, get one custom made for you at an exhaust shop for like 100 bucks. if not that, then go 00vi, then get the ecu tuned for the 00vi. Thats the order in which i've done things. Next for me is 00vi since you dont need an ecu to gain the low end a mevi loses. ill do the ecu when the money is there

lots of ecu talk in here. Ive read in numerous places that the 97 ecu is not upgradeable and when I go to JWT or TS's websites they do not list prices for 97 ecu upgrades. So are 97 owners just out of luck?

No. your fine. you can use a 95 or 96 ECU w/o about CEL probs. 98 and 99 arent so lucky. CELs appear.

no, 97 owners can use the 95/96 ecu with a possible cel. 98-99 owners are SOL for now. 99 for sure, not positive on 98s. and 00VI is the 2000-2001 Variable Intake. Creates more hp up top and down low than the vq30de IM(intake manifold).

Yeah we where discussing this stuff on the all motor forum. I think they were testing it to see which IM has better flow(5th gen vs 5.5th). But the best na mod under 1k is def a IM with ECU combo, it rocks your curve like nothing.

00 VI isn't really hard to install; you just need to be able to figure out which vaccum hoses need to be connected and which can be capped off. In the words of Nismo3112, "Think of it as an advanced bolt-on." Also, it's much better than the MEVI as there is no low/mid-range loss.

Salvage yards. The way I did it requires the most fabrication but I bought the TB and IACV adapters from the person who sold it to me.

Me (Nismo3112 had it before me)
Kevlo911
BSwithTF
SDot82
Stephen Max
Krismax (took it off to pursue "other" routes)
SlamedMax98

I'm sure I'm missing a few people too.

I have a TS ECU but that was because I got it for $380 and total downtime was 3 days.

Downtime with the TS is superior compared to JWT.

AFAIK TS has only one ECU with extended rev limit (deezo), but obviously if they can do one, they can do many, and this is on an auto.

Both give the same or near same gains under the curve.

00VI mean the intake manifold from a 2000 or 2001 Maxima (5th gen) it has the variable intake, which sadly we (the american Max's) dont have.

Yes, but I know for a fact that Stephen Max has claimed its not that easy of a bolt on.
Their is a lot of fabricating still involved and diffrent setups. You make it sound as if they are all installed they same way.
Some are using the 00 lower manifold and fuel rail, some are eliminating the IACV while others use it,, others are using the 5th gens.
Then theirs the EGR to consider.

THT, you yourself posted that your having idling issues, so I would definately state its not a direct swap for those not familair with it.

You mean the american 4th gens.
American 5th gens have a variable intake that the 4th gen guys are using.

I personally feel that if your looking for a mod that you can definalty feel its results plus see on a dyno, the ECU is the way to go.

A VI will also help paired with the ECU.

well we are forgetting tranny mods also, look into a light weight flywheel, sts, and new clutch upgrades for better performance. that is if you are 5spd

I have all those and their all great mods, but I dont really think their gains are nowhere near as great as the ecu.
The ecu is a true performance mod that is felt throught the power band.
The lightened flyhweel just frees up some power and allows rpms to climb quicker.
The clutch allows you to grab gear quicker and is stiffer, the sts just shortens the throw in between gears.
