Had this same problem with my 96 Maxima. It was actually the speedometer cutting in and out. Sometimes I'd look down and the needle would be set on zero. For some reason, the O/D light would sometimes blink for like 30 seconds when I started up the car, also.

A couple of shops tried replacing some kind of sensor but that only worked for a couple of weeks. I finally just took it in to the dealership and had them replace the speedo.

 

so what should i replace to get the odometer to work its stopped at 147,000

 

Woodcrow if your od light was flashing that means you have a trans issue
