Question about my starter (8 or 10 tooth?)

I am thinking about getting my start rebuilt, and they said the price would be different based on if it is an 8tooth drive or a 10 tooth drive? WTH is that? Someone tell me please Thank you (It's on my 97)

Yeah, the 10 tooth is a much stronger redesigned unit. It will last much longer. If you currently have an 8 tooth don't bother getting it rebuilt.

So if I have an 8 tooth, I should go buy a 10 and it will fit? If I have the 8 tooth I need to call and just buy a brand new 10, or can they make an 8 into a 10? I don't know jack crap about starters ...... I know if you hit it with a hammer it will start though. lol

I never really understood how a 10 tooth starter would work if the flywheel matched up with the 8. I didn't think any parts stores sell 8 tooth units. There probably won't be any benifit cost wise to getting yours rebuilt. Just go to the parts store. Buy a starter and bring back the old one. Usually you get a core charge back. Kinda like axles.

FYI, in '01 my mom got ripped on a new starter. $322 for a reman'ed unit.
