5th Gen tranny in 4th Gen?
5th Gen tranny in 4th Gen?
Hey all,
Since my tranny is gone, it looks like I'm going to throw a used one in there. My car is a '97 & I've found a nice deal on an '01 tranny....are there any people out there who have already done this type of swap & can confirm it works? Anyone who's tried & failed? Please let me know... I just want to make sure everything will fit perfectly so my mechanic doesn't get angry :-D Thanks guys!

Forget it, I went to your cardomain and notice you dont have the auto dipstick...
OK the tranny bolts up fine, the only thing is that the shifter is moved forward a little bit, but nothing a STS shouldn't solve.....
Try contacting nismology as he has a 2K 5spd in his 96 SE....
As far as bolting up and connecting it should be completely the same.

Ive done it..it workds perfect...the shifter will sit up alittle foward but youll get used to it..
To prove to yourself and your macanic that it will fit, if you have your macanic check the part numbers for the axle, they are the same for 95-01...
My good tranny deal was 01' w/10K miles, a Drivers side axle, for $800 shipped

Thanks guys!
After receiving all the positive feedback, it looks like I'm going to go with the '01 5-spd tranny and Courtesy STS. I'll probably be adding the ACT stage 1 clutch pack & Fidanza flywheel as well....plus a new MOMO shift ****. Can't wait!!! Thanks again guys! :-D

now i hear people say that 3rd gear is stronger, inturn what is that refering to? Does that mean it's more durable? Pulls harder?
...or can someone just list the benefits of having a 5th gen tranny???
Thanks

Considering the 5th gen engine produces more torque than the 4th gens, it's designed to handle a bigger output. So the synchros (baulk rings), sleeves, etc can handle a little more abuse. Plus, the 5th gens aren't known for having problems with the diff bearings.

Guys,
Thanks so much for the feedback so far! I talked to my nervous mech. & he said to talk the dealer. So I call the dealer & of course they tell me it won't work. They said not so much that the tranny wouldn't physically fit, but that the electrical connections won't fit or work properly. Any input on this? I'm still heavily leaning towards the '01 5spd so I really hope this works!! Thanks fellas!

the shifter sits forward on the 5th gen tranny? on my 4th gen tranny with the customenterprise short shifter, its sits way up to the shifter console and hits the trim in 1, 3, and 5. so if i were to get a 5th gen tranny, then i probably wouldn't be able to go into 1, 3, or 5?
