Automatic Transmission slipping?

When I'm already moving in say 2nd or 3rd gear and I floor it, the engine just revs for like 1/2 a second and then the car downshifts and there's a sudden jolt of power. Best way to picture this is to picture a manual transmission car downshifting without lifting. So while the clutch is in, the engine revs up until the lower gear is engaged.

Does this mean my transmission is slipping? My friend's G20 used to do the same thing, except his engine would rev for like a full second or two before it downshifted.

This only happens during downshifts though. From a stop, the transmission is more than strong enough to spin the tires in the dry.

That could be normal.

If the tranny is in 3rd or even 4th gear and your moving at say 30-35 MPH you could experiance what your describing. The sudden jolt you get after the short rev up is your tranny hitting 1st gear for a second. The downshift from 3rd or 4th to 1st takes a split second and while that's happening the engine is starting to rev up.

Our trannys aren't quick shifters, they don't react as fast as you punch the gas.

Pheeew. I just got the car a month ago and I got all paranoid. I'm just used to Toyota transmissions which don't do that. Thanks a bunch.
