Cold Start Problems

I replaced my Coolant Temp. Sensor cause i pulled up a code for it about 2 weeks ago.

Before i changed the temp sensor, my idle in the morning would be pretty wierd, like it would rev up to 1500~ and instead of holding it there till it would warm up it would drop all the way to 800~ and then slowly raise back up to around 1300~

After replacing it i thought this would be fixed...but its still doing it! Not as bad tho, but it still doesnt go back to normal and cold start like it used to...

Any ideas?

Have you cleaned your idle air control valve (IACV)?

Hmm.. i was thinking would a MINOR vacum leak in the IACV cause this? I remember when i cleaned the IACV that i reused the old gasket and it had a small crack in it that kinda just put back together....But i cant hear any leaks...but could this be the problem?

Post up some more ideas tho, cause i doubt its that... lol

Vacuum leaks are a major contributor to rough/surging idle on many cars. It could possibly be the culprit.

yes it can. You can try to cheat by putting some gasket sealer on both sides. But these gaskets are petty cheap. I'd just buy a new one

Try spraying with wd40 and listening for a higher idle?

You could be there for the rest of your life and not hear a vacuum leak.

Check the operation and adjustment of the fast idle plunger and cam linkage.

The Haynes shop manual is your friend.

Hmm....Not the most literate person, but im guessing this involves inspecting the timing chain and all those parts around there? Cause i do need to replace the top tensioner closest to the passenger side, it clacks durring warmup/cold start in the morning, but not while driving...Could this also be a cause to my problem?

(damn, this post is making my max look like POS haha)

Read this and dig around the repair manual. Covers VQ30 also.

I commented on the possibility of the vacuum leak being the culprit and suggested subsequent to that that he might not hear it. That was the recent experience I had on my other car, which is not a Maxima. Not being the mechanical genius that you are Jeff92SE that's the best I can come up. Sorry to disappoint you, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

Well since he ALREADY mentioned not hearing anything, I fail to see why you restated the obvious. If you aren't a mechcanical genius or don't know how to fix this guy's problem, why post??? You and Amelius related?

j/k. you helped in the first reply....

All I was suggesting was that because he couldn't hear a vacuum leak, it doesn't mean there isn't one. I couldn't hear the vacuum leak on my RX7 either but it was the culprit in my idle being all over the map despite the TPS being adjusted 17 ways from Sunday. I guess I should limit my mechanical skills to filling my gas tank and checking my oil. I'm good at that.

And no I am not related to Armelius. I haven't seen many postings from him of late and am somewhat disappointed because I wait for them with bated breath. Well, I guess mrgreek's insights will have to suffice in a pinch, lol. As you can tell, I'm easily amused.

The fast idle control is on the throttle body. The plunger that controls it is down on the lower left side, under the linkage. There is a cam and follower that opens the throttle slightly when your engine is cold. There is actually a scribe mark on the cam that needs to line up with another scribe mark on the follower at a specific temperature. (cold engine) The item that could fail is the plunger. It's not sold seperately either, if it's bad you have to replace the throttle body.

Oh!, wait up...Is this fast idle control where the throttle cables attach? Its kinda like a lil screw that you can adjust?
