E-brake not working

My ebrake isnt working anymore and I have a few ideas about why, but I could use some input. The handle goes up fine, and there is tension on it, however it's not holding the car or stopping it. Over the winter I messed around with the adjuster on it because you could only pull the handle up 2-3 inches max, and maybe it's too loose now? OR There is something wrong with the cables. As many other maxs have had this problem, my cables have been caught on that screw/stud that sticks out on teh frame and has made a hole in the cable. So I'm not sure which it is. Also when you pull on the ebrake, it does move the rear calipers but they end up getting stuck and not releasing all the way (you can tell because it starts to smell after some driving)

What do you guys suggest? Get new cables, or try re-adjusting first?
BTW anyone know how much the cables go for?
Thanks

Get new cables. It's a common probably apparently. I just ordered a set from a local dealer for $69/side. You want to replace both since Nissan issued a TSB about it and now they use slightly longer cables.
