Well, now that that weather is getting nice, I am slowly planning for upgrading the brakes on my '97.

Here's my current problem. I have no idea about the maintenance history of this car before I bought it. It came of a lease and I haven't hand any real problems with it.

Now, I was talking to someone who knows a good bit more about changing/rebuilding brakes than I do, and he mentioned that I might was to consider purchasing replacement hardware to rebuild the caliper.

So, I noticed in Bill's Stickey that Nissan offeres Hardware kits and caliper rebuild kits.

1. What is the difference between the two?

2. How can I tell if I need either? My car has 73k miles on it and like I said, I have no idea what has been done when to it.

3. Is there not a rear caliper rebuild kit?

Thanks!

The Front Brake Hardware Kit is the Shims only, while the caliper rebuild kit has the pins, etc for actually rebuilding the caliper.

Age is the primary factor. Some people like to rebuild their calipers every year or 2, others do it at 100k, others do it when they notice abnormal pad wear/rotor warpage. I have 111k on my 94 and 32k on my 99 and haven't rebuilt calipers on either of them. Next time I do brakes on the 94, I will rebuild the front calipers....

3. Is there not a rear caliper rebuild kit?

Yes, but I don't know the part number. Call Courtesy Nissan or a local dealer and they can give you a part number. Normally, a rear caliper rebuild shouldn't be necessary, but since 4th gen Maximas are proportioned to use the rear brakes more than most vehicles, it may not be a bad idea to rebuild them.....But I would just replace pads and turn/replace rotors first.....

Thanks!

Thanks Bill.

Do you know what the hardware/rebuild kits cost? I've emailed courtesy, but I haven't heard back yet.

It should be $20/caliper, so it would be $40 for the fronts....

The link provided at the bottom of the Brake Parts sticky post is a searchable parts database for all Nissan Part Numbers so you can get an idea of prices.......

Good luck on getting an e-mail response.

Sweet. Thanks again. I tried the online database, but it said that the parts were not found...maybe it was offline?

Thanks again for all the help.
