it definitely is possible...my boss from when i used to install stereos at best buy was telling me a story about in his younger years someone he was working with was wiring up an alarm in a brand new 911, and they connected up the positive lead on a 4guage wire(yeah they were using 4 guage wire in an alarm because the battery was in the back, and they needed the power in the front, but for some reason didnt just relocate the battery, or something, i wasnt there so i dont know) before they connected up the fuse box...and it grounded itself on a part of the chassis and heated up, then lit the carpeting on fire, and burned the car to the ground. granted im sure there was a fuse on the circuit you are talking about its a little less likely, but since it was located right by the gas tank, just a little spark could ignite that.
