Ordered my red/clears from CM today at that good price of $95 shipped. It should arrive tomorrow and I was wondering whether there is any/much difficulty in installing this on my car. I apologize for sounding leery, but I want to make sure I make the swap correctly and carefully. I'm assuming they will come with some sort of basic instruction on making the swap. Any input you all may have in terms of helpful tricks is welcome. Thanks.

I was studying through the FAQ's and 'how to's' but found nothing about replacing the tails with red/clears other than how to make my own. I searched for quite a while, too, but found nothing to help. Thanks for your input, though.

 

There is nothing hard besides pushing out you stock tails out. Sometimes it could be a pain.
Other then that, its 4 screws on each side.

 

Excellent. Thanks. Are the OEM tails sealed with some sort of silicone that helps hold/seal them in place? I once remember someone saying this was the case and made them a bit tough to push out without cracking the housing. Just trying to be cautious here.

 

Whats going on, Doc? The only hard part about this process is getting your OEM tails off. Just have patience.

 

without cracking the housing..is when you bake the tail light to open it up....there is no silicone surrounding the entire headlight onto the car..just it gets dry back there...and it gets a little stuck..take out the screws and push.

Doc...what are you planning on doing with your stock tail pieces? I'm also going to get the ones from CM but I dont want my other ones lying around. Are you planning on selling them...if yes how much do you expect to get for them?

Not sure. I'm thinking of maybe selling them if there is an interest for them, but I wouldn't know what to ask at this time.

Doc - hope this helps. Just follow the beginning where the instructions for removal are. You may have to tap on the screw heads with a hammer, the lights are in pretty tight. Then just push them out. Also, the black sticky stuff is really tacky. Try not to get it all over the place, it's a pain to get off. Just take your time. I also have the cm ones, fitment is good and you get new weather stripping to seal the lights.

Thank you for your assistance on this. I installed them last night and it went very well. Pulling the old ones wasn't as tough as I imagined because I basically grabbed the inner section of the light on the outside (if that makes any sense) and used the leverage of the light against itself to pry it loose. You are right, that black seal is a Bish, though. Stuff is extremely hard to get off of anything. All in all a success and the look is sweet.

 

I too was told that the hard part was getting the tails off. I was inexperienced in taking off the tail lights. I would have done it differently and with much ease now.

As I recall correctly, the directions have you get in your trunk and try using body parts with enough force to yank the tail light out. Although this worked, the second time I did my tails I simply heated the black silicone (or whatever that is) around the edges with my heat gun and the light came out:

1) oh say about 10x faster

2) oh say about 10x smoother

3) oh say....what is "force"?

 

I actually was surprised that the tails came out so easily without any aid from heat or otherwise. Don't get me wrong, they weren't very easy, but I pulled them out without climbing in the trunk and pushing them. I worked the light against itself and a fulcrum and they wiggled out with relative ease.
