Engine Coolant Temp Sensor: Where is it?

I want to replace the engine coolant temp. sensor and was told that there are two sensors. One is for the ECU while the other one is for the dash gauge.

Is this true? I thought we only have one sensor near the radiator hose?

Doesn't clearly explain where it is though

Its in the upper radiator hose, normally your snorkel air intake will obscure the view, so remove that and there it is.

Its the sensor on the right in pic

Wow! Great instructions and an excellent picture! Thank you guys! I always thought that it's near the thermostat housing.

My water temp needle has been jumping up and down in the past three years, I would need to check this sensor right away.

Thanks again!

If you Needle jumps round then its the Sensor on the left. The one on the right is the temp sensor for ECU that retards engine if engine out of norm temp ranges

By saying sensor on the left means that single black-wired sensor probe is the dirtiest in your picture, right?

The one you are saying for ECU is the two-wire-sensor (yellow and black), right?

(don't want to insult you really, but I just want to make sure it's the right one)

Thanks a bunch!

Yup

The dirty one with just the single black cable is for the temp gauge.
The one with yellow & black is the ECU one.

I just replaced my ecu one last sunday, the car is much more stable, when accelerating it is very much smoother. my ecu temp sensor cost about $20 so i'd probably replace both.

Done! Yayyy!! No more needle jumping now. The connections was apparently dirty and very sensitive to vibration, resulting in the temp needle jumping up and down.

I could not take it off, so I just cleaned it really good with hand, and Aerokroil.

Thanks for the picture, I have been dealing with this problem in the past 2 years now, so finally this is the root of it.

Doh! I just checked and can't see them either, I'll type them in from my manual if I get a second tonight.

Do you want the temp gauge sensor or the ECTS (ecu one)?
