check engine light
I have a '95 maxima with 48k miles on it. I was driving home from my daily 30 mile commute and toward the end the check engine light came on. Is that something I need to have checked out? The dealer won't be able to look at it until Wed. afternoon and I need the car for my daily commute. The dealer says it is just for emission purposes. Is that true?
Thanks!
Thanks!

RE check engine light.
You should not have a problem driving the car on your daily commute,though you should note that Nissans booklet at the dealership warns drivers with this problem not too drive over 45 MPH and to avoid driving up steep hills.Basically they recommend not to push your car hard.I personally don't think it would be a problem.Since I've done it before.Better yet if you got a minute go check your ECU yourself and translate the code.I have a feeling you do not no how to do this so hear goes,The ECU is located just to the right of your gas pedal,there you will find a plastic cover with two screws,remove the 2 screws and you will find your shiny ECU,you will then see a place at the top left of the ecu a place were you can fit a flat headed screw driver,before tampering with it put your key in the ignition and turn to the ACC mode,now go and line up your flatheaded screw driver with the screw in the ecu turn the screw fully clockwise,make sure you do not force the screw when it stops,pause 5 seconds then turn the screw back fully counter clock wise and look at your check engine light it should now be flashing a code.The way you read the code is a long flash which lasts about a second represents 10 and each long flash after it add another 10 and so on.Then after the long flashes there will be short flashes which each count as one.So another words 3 long flashes and 3 short flashes means #33 which for example means there was a Oxygen sensor circuit default.So find out your code and right back hear and when I get a chance either tonight or tomarrow and I or someone else will translate your code for you.If you want to then clear your check engine light either disconect your battery for 24 hours or repeat the process I just told you but when you the screw clockwise wait 20 seconds and then turn it back counter clockwise all the way,once again don't force it.Now try starting the car and if the lights still not back on then try taking it out for a 5 minute spin,and with any luck the check engine light does not comeback on,and then you fixed your problem for free.Good luck {I think I just wrote my first novel}
