How to:
1. Soak O2 sensor with a penetrant - PB Blaster for example.
2. Use a O2 sensor socket or a large box-wrench to remove old O2 sensor
3. Replace with new sensor.

If you have trouble getting the old one out, take it to a muffler shop - they'll be able to torch it out for you for a few bucks.

btw, it is called a catalytic converter.

Doesn't apply since our o2 sensor is aft of the catalytic converter. Still easy to replace though.

Sorry about this bump and thread jack, but since I can't start a thread of my own yet....

I just wanted to clarify a few things regarding O2 sensors. I've read through the FAQs and I can't seem to find the answers to my questions. First of all, my CEL code is telling me it's the left bank upstream O2 sensor - this may be a dumb question, but is the left bank the side facing the firewall, or vice versa? Also, is it a general rule of thumb to replace both sensors as a pair, or is it ok to just replace the faulty one only? My car's a '97 if that matters at all. Thanks guys.

Left bank is the one closest to headlights. Stand at the driver's side of the engine bay and you are facing the same direction as the engine.

o2 sensors go out at different times...it only makes sense to change them out as they go. They aren't hard to replace.

Alright - enough of the cadillac jokes... he's new and trying to learn... no need to rub it in over and over.

Sweet! I was hoping it would be the one that was easier to get at. I've got to bring it through emissions testing within the next couple of weeks, so there's no more putting this off. Now that I know which is which (Haynes manual sucks, BTW) I'll get off my **** and do it. Thanks!
