New trans symptoms :(

If I'm going roughly 10-15mph and put it in first (don't worry I never downshift like that, but it's just something that caught my attention) I get a very strange winding noise. Also if I do the same to go into 2nd gear it does it as well, usually around 20mph. My other symptoms are that when the car is not in gear and my foot is completely off the clutch, I get some what of the same noise, except not as loud. When I get my foot all the way down on the clutch the noise goes away, until I begin to release and about 2 - 3 inches up from the floor I get the noise again.

It's like the sound of a small turbine turning on... sort of hard to explain.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Same Exact problem!

I am experiencing the exact same behavior word for word!
wondering if you have found out what it is?
I suspect that it is the drive train bearing that needs to be replaced, so i am thinking of rebuilding my transmission. I think this because I actually crawled under the car while in neutral and listened to the transmission and there it doesn’t sound a fan anymore there it is a more mechanical sound, kinda like the one old ball bearings make
What I am going to try for now is go to the dealer and see what they say.

I got my max for 3 weeks now. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. But dont worry, 95 and 96 max has all the same problem. (oil leak, bearing problem, strange sound), any way, i I went to tranny garage, and the guy knows the max tranny by heart, he said thats not good but you can ride ne way. BUT look if there;s enough oil in the trans!!!!!!!!! !!!!! REALLy important! because the 95 and 96 seal always cracks.

But dont take chance, go for a rebuilt, thats what im plannig to do, but i need money (around 800 and 1300$)

I think it is my throw-out bearing, however i have yet to fully determine what it is. I don't think its diff bearings because the trans was taken out a year ago and it looked good inside.

I had a similar issue a couple years back. I was due for a clutch job anyways so I did the clutch and also replaced the release/throwout bearing. While the trans was aout I also checked the amount of play in the input shaft and found it was VERY loose - turns out my issue was a damaged input bearing. Did the rebuild myself, only cost $30 for the bearing and a few more bucks for the permatex and trans oil.

It is not the throw out bearing, I kinda hoped it was too but after replacing it while putting in a new clutch the noise remained. Many, many Nissan's to this and I am sure other cars as well. My friends 350z does it. It is most likely the input shaft bearing. I know of some that have had the bearing end up failing, but I also know guys like myself that have had the noise for a long, long time and nothing happen.

Everyone who has heard it and i've explained it to has said throw out bearing. But, I'm thinking it might not be so. What other symptoms would I have with a bad input shaft bearing? How expensive would it be to replace?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Dude trust me. I know exaclty the noise your car is making. It is not the throw out bearing. That is an easy assumption to make and understandable why a person who may not be very familiar with maxima/nissans would think that.

Input shaft bearing is not something simple....well it is, but it is not easy to get to. Gotta drop the trans

So if someone is going to do it for me, should I go ahead and have them put in a clutch at the same time? I have a craptastic luk clutch in it right now. If the trans is going to have to be dropped anyways, might as well replace the clutch right?

Also, anyone know how much the input shaft bearing replacement should cost? (roughly)

Definately either an input shaft bearing or main shaft bearing. My friends 96 is doing this as well. We are gonna drop his tranny this summer and replace both input bearings and main bearings.

This seems to be a common problem along with the notorious differential side bearings. I think it is safe to say that the manual tranny is weak spot on this car.

So the only way to really know which one it is, is to have the trans dropped, I assume. Anyone now where I can get these parts and how much they cost?

Its on the input shaft lol i got a quote for clutch install plus full bearing re-build done at goodyear, I'll supply the clutch, and they will get the bearing kit, I'm looking at $1380 + clutch ~$200 for fifth gen clutch.....$1580 any input on that price? Is it a good price?

They also have a finance option where I only have to pay ~$115 a month on it for 12 months

The problem with dealer rebuilds is that they freqently mess up the pre-load and the rebuild falls apart in like 20,000 miles, conviently it is right after the warr expires

lsd tranny requires new axles if you don't already have a vlsd. Goodyear is going to re-build it, not the dealer.

For that price you could almost get a new vlsd tranny. I got mine from everythingnissan for $1650 plus $50 shipping. Add another $150 for rebulit vlsd axles for a total $1850. So, if you take a solid weekend to do the install yourself, you get a brand new tranny, vlsd, and new axles an extra $450 compared to the $1400 rebuild.

No finance option of course, and it is more money and work, but I think it would be worth it...

You could also attempt to replace all the bearings yourself... your car would be down forever though...

Looks like the payment plan is your best option.
