Adding OEM fogs to GXE

1997 maxima gxe

i looked and saw a harness zip tied up where the foglights go and am assumming this harness is for the oem foglights. now, my question is, is is simply a matter of screwing the bracket for the foglight in place, and hooking the harness up all there is?

Don't forget that you must replace your light switch with one designed to control fog lights too. I'm doing the same mod and just picked-up the switch from a junkyard the other day. I'm going to pop it in ythis weekend. It came off easily (2 screws) from a steering column already missing the steering wheel and plastic covers. I think I can just take off the covers and make th switch. I'm expecting an plug to be there when I take off the covers. I'll let you know. I think that's about it.

I bought the metal frames and switch at a junk yard. The actual lights are hard to find in the yards. Any idea where you are going to get yours and for how much? I haven't priced at a dealer yet.

if your car is prewired for fog lights, install the bracket and the fog light plug it in, and next you will need to get a relay from nissan for the fog lights and then you will need to get a headlight/fog light switch the "stalk"

$95.00

I emailed the seller to see if the price included driver/pass side or just one side.

hmm, im sure that nissan only made one wiring harness for all models (GLE,SE,GXE) so a relay probably isnt neccesarry. i could be wrong though.

Fog Lights For A '99 GXE ...

When I bought the factory fog light kit from a dealer ( Jerry Rome?) the fog lights mounted to the bumper frame, the stalk light switch went in easily, and all connectors were prewired at both ends - I just had to find them with a flashlight, cut the tape to free each one, and plug them in. No relay to install on my '99.
Kinda scary -everything worked first time and continues to work OK.

In courtesy nissan homepage

http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchan...de=999F1-A3279

it says

"1997 to 1999 Maximas are pre-wired for fog lights (except SE and GXE A/T models without factory ABS, VSS and a Driver's Power Seat)"

Mine is 1999 GXE A/T models without factory ABS, VSS and a Driver's Power Seat,
so can't I do this mod?

Just popped-in my junkyard switch/stalk. The wire for the foglights was sitting there like a gift from Henry Nissan himself. Just had to cut the tape and plug it into the new stalk along with the two plugs I pulled from the old stalk. It was simple. Removed the plastic knee bolster (2 p/h screws), metal knee bolster reinforcement panel (2 p/h screws/10 mm bolts), and upper/lower steering column covers (6 p/h screws). The only potential problem was the electronic piece secured to the back of the plastic knee bolster. There is a white plastic box back there with a couple wires coming in. I had no idea and trashed it when I pulled-off the bolster. I'm hoping its nothing important. Headlights work fine.

Next step = attaching frames then buying and installing bulbs. Are you looking at bulbs only for $95? That seems high but what isn't.

Just bought my whole installation kit from jerryromenissan.com for $185 shipped after discount. Put in code 'ACCESSORY' at checkout for 25% discount. Expires on 31st.

Everything needed was included (L/R lamps, bulbs, L/R brackets, bolts, relay, and fog stalk) I installed it yesterday without any problems

My 97 GXE has just power seat and cruise, no abs. The only trick with installing them is you have to loosen the plastic splash guards under the bumper to get the bracket in place. Everything else is plain and simple.

Lata,

here's a shortcut:

you dont NEED the factory stalk/switch. You can use any toggle switch, just jump the power from the factory stalk to a toggle switch and put it whereever you want. They will still shut off when you put your high beams on though...

Anyway, yea its easy if you are prewired for it, because a lot of us arn't ( I was). Either way, screw the brackets on, put the lights in, put the trim piece on, and your set. Oh yea, you need the relay, but I just took it from my horn until I get another one.

My goodness, STOCK................ Not STALK. Stalk, is if I were stalking my ex-girlfriend. Sheesh... Probably be better to get the factory directional arm with the foglight switch on it. It'll look nicer than putting some silly looking toggle switch on your dash. Just my .02.

BTW that auction is only for the left hand foglight.... if you scroll down the page it lists it as so.

No fair, if only I had the ABS then I would be prewired too

Ooooooh, I mis-understood. Stalk, meaning the actual arm.... I was thinking everyone was saying stock meaning, a stock part. My apologies.

Bracket, lights, switch, and relay. That's it. I'm half way through mine. The switch was easier to install than I thought it would be. Brackets too. If I can find some cheap lights then I'll be in phat city.

It looks like there is an interesting mod to allow use of fogs w/o headlights. Might be worth checking iout in the how to's. There is a recent threat discussing.

I believe thats the buzzer that goes ding-ding-ding if you have the keys in the ignition or lights on when you open your door... try it out - i bet that doesn't work anymore (i.e. no warning ding-ding-dings).

Cheers.

You're right. It was my warning buzzer. It no longer works. Asta la vista annoying dinging sound!

I checked with a local dealer. They want $177, yes one hunred and seventy-seven American doillars, for each fog light. They sell the entire kit for $220, including two lights, switch, and frames. Everythingnissan has the kit for $178. I don't know whether the lights in the kit are lower quality than the individual lights. In any event, the lights are expensive. Anyone have any cheaper alternatives?

You should be able to find a stalk at a junkyard. If not then PM me. I can get one here and get it out to you.

whoa way to dig an old thread up guy!

yeah there is always a possibility that it doesn't. did you look where they will be installed? get down on the ground and look through the fog light opening and the connector should be right there if you have it. If you do, it is a very simple process to install them. I put installed mine in probably less then 15 minutes thats with installing the switch and everything.

later,

it is most likely taped up with the corner lights just above the foglights. that's where mine was hidden. just unwrap that harness a litte and the socket should be there.

my fog lights were prewired, i bought the foglights with brackets, switch, and relay for 60 from an .org member (one was cracked). i went to a junkyard the next day and just walked out with a fog light, kind of surprised at myself, but hey, free fog light.

EVerything hooked up right, I just had to cut the stock bumper because there's a little bar on the GLE's where the foglights go. The whole "mod" took about 10 mins to install, and I then rewired them to run with my driving lights and high beams. Not bad for 60 bucks. :-D
