Clutch out / Loud Whinning in 1st Gear

Last week my clutch started slipping/going out - also when I'm in first gear, there is this very loud whinning sound in first gear.. doesn't sound right.. so I took it to the shop on Tuesday.. they checked out the clutch and said it was definitely gone -- they also said that there were some missing teeth on 1st gear which is causing all that noise... they said it would have to be taken to a tranny shop to be looked at, but for both the clutch and replacement of the gear(s), it's going to be about 1,000 bucks... is there anything else this noise could be?
