Cut shift lever?

I have a short shifter but I don't think it feels nearly as good as the factory unit but the factory unit does have long throws. I know some people have cut their shifters. How does a cut shifter feel? How much should I cut off? I was thinking it would be easier to cut a section out and weld the end back on so I don't have to get new threads cut into the lever. I don't race this car, just hate the long throws. I know cutting it will make a difference. Can someone with a cut shifter help me out with some info? Have any pictures?

Cutting the short throw or the stock one? Cutting it too short will make shifting even more notchy, and you might find yourself fighting to get the car into gear due to the lack of leverage.

Install an aftermarket **** as I did and you don't have to rethread, I've cut mine down twice not wanting to take off too much as you can never go back, but I'm really happy with mine and have no desire to install a true STS unless I actually tried one on someone elses Max and liked it. Honestly I noticed no difference in "notchiness" , it definitely feels better looks better too! I think I cut off approx 2-3" can't remember exactly and had to file the shaft a little as it gets thicker the lower you go. How much you take off is all personal taste I'm sure some other org'rs will say I didn't take off enough, thats up to you, like I said do a bit at a time so you don't take off too much, good luck:

You'll need one of these:

and one of these:

Unless you have a power grinder!!!

If you use a power grinder, make sure you cover your seats.. I used my winter floor mats when I did so as to not burn the seats and floor

The short shifter is a bit notchier then the OEM unit.
If you cut it, it will become a bit notchier.
Install a synthetic tranny fluid and you will be surprised how smooth it will become, even if your using the OEM shifter.
I cut mine with a dremel and used an aftermarket shiftknob.

I'm using the STS now, the original unit is out of the car. I have Amsoil in the tranny now. I want the smooth feel and lower **** height. I just want to know how much to cut off. If I don't like the original when it's cut, I can simply put the STS back in. Any ideas on how much to cut off?

i used to have a STS, but then i put my stock shifter back and cut it down and love how smooth it feels, even though the throws are obviously longer than the STS, i still like it...i cut about 2.5 inches off the stock shifter, and put on a MOMO shift ****, here are pics..
