ambient switch upgrade

Does anyone know if a 1999 Climate control unit with the ambient button will be a direct plug and play modification with my 1998 climate control unit. My freind at our local nissan dealership has a climate control unit from a 1999, and i want to know if its worth buying it. Do i need to pull the whole stereo unit out to get the climate control out, or can i just remove the climate control unit by itself.

the 98/99 auto CC's are direct swaps. but you can retro just the button into your 98. you have to pull apart the whole center stack to do the job.

Thanks for the quick response. I can get the unit very cheap, thought it would look nicer.

Just wondering...I do notice that the Climate control for the 1997 Max also has a AMB set of letters on the display (like actual read out), is there suppose to be an ambient function on the 97 as well. Or did they just put it there for no good reason

That's just like mine. When the sun shines on the display, I can see the letters "amb". My dads 91 has the ambient function, as do all 3rd gens I believe, wonder why Nissan didn't just include them in all their Maxima's. Are all the other pieces already included in the car, like the temp sensor? Can't imagine that their is a temp sensor in the unit itself, or that would just tell you the temp inside the car, not the outside "ambient" temp. By the way, anybody know where the temp sensor would be?

I drilled a small 3/16 hole and retrofitted a small black rubber button where the square AMB button is supposed to be. I have an extension in the back of the button, so when I depress it, it depresses the momentary contact switch located deeper in the climate control unit. This small mod cost me only time.
