Caliper Piston "tricks" Anyone?

I'm gonna replace my brake pads again, and I already anticipate having issues getting the caliper pistons compressed into place. I bought the caliper tool and also tried to use the needle nose pliers as an alternative but ofcourse only one piston budged. I was forced to replace the other entire caliper in a loss to dirt, rust and grime. I sprayed on a ton of lubricant with no success, which probably wasn't such a good idea because it probably destroyed the seal. Anyone know of a trick that I haven't tried?

Thanks.

Are you talking about the front or back? Well what i do is i remove the cap from the master cylinder so its a little easier for the pressure to go back. For the front, I usually use a rock and a c clamp. For the back, i just take some pliers and start twisting. Its tedious, but it works.

You are turning the piston clockwise I trust. I just replaced both rear calipers and brake pads about two months ago on my 95SE because the right rear was frozen. If you have to replace your rear calipers, ensure you replace both and not just one as brakes are hydraulic and you will have uneven brake application, in all likelihood, unless both calipers are replaced at the same time (or so I've been told).

My right rear caliper froze because I hadn't use the parking brake much in about 6 years.

Nope - you've got the bases covered. If the piston doesn't retract fairly easily with the piston tool (turning clockwise), then you have a seized piston and its probably time for new calipers. As already mentioned, be sure to either loosen the bleeder screw (and then subsequently bleed the brakes) or undo the master cylinder reservoir cap before trying to retract the pistons back into the caliper.

Rock and C-clamp?

How do you use a c-clamp on the fronts? I thought we could only screw the piston back in. If I could use a C-clamp that would be a big bonus.

I guess when I do the rears and I find I need to replace calipers I'll replace both- hopefully it won't come down to that.
