He's getting it tonight, so I told him to warm that thing up and I'll blow his doors off when he's ready. His retort was something like, well when your car breaks down I'll drive circles around you. What is he talking about? His response was "For reliability, which would you rather have, a **LEXUS** or a Nissan."

Some people just don't get it... I don't think he understands that he's buying a Toyota with rims and fancy break lights. Don't get me wrong, the thing is sweet, but I'll stick with my used Max for half the cost, thanks.

Just about to turn 70K miles/4 years in December, I negotiated tires into the purchase price, and I've replaced the front pads. Can you spell RELIABLE ?

Reliability Huh? - Max is the same if not better.

It's really not up for discussion.
-To be certain -that is a sweet car. -I'm almost jealous.
However why wouldn't he focus on something more performance oriented. That's like saying -"oh yeah well..red's a better car color than black!" - it's opinion and speculative at best.
Besides - if he's gonna mistreat a new car by racing all the time then you will most likely have the last laugh. Ask him what he thinks about all the elctric problems the new GS models had their first model year. Remote not working on doors - radio probs- cruise control working intermittantly.(all documented by C&D long term test) - That will really shine him on especially after you smoke him.
Good Luck!

Sure Lexus is a Toyota, but Toyota is RELIABLE!
I had a '98 Max for a year and half, it didn't start several times and twice it was towed to dealer. Numberous small problems.
Had my Toyota GS400 now for over a year now, 20k miles not a SINGLE problem.

If you really want to see who is faster, wait for him to break the car in, then go head to head.

hmmm, mixed response...

Yes, Lex is a Toyota, however, Toyota's are just as reliable as Nissan's IF not more. Different online reviews I've seen on new cars, always put the Toyota Camry or the Honda Accord as #1 reliability wise, Toyota's ARE very reliable.
My friend got a 92 Camry V6 LE, he got his car about 2 weeks after I got mine, he had 89k miles on it, I had 84k on my 93 SE. So far, I had to rebuilt the tranny, 1200$ (which is on the verge of crapping out again) + about 200$ in other minor repairs. He had to replace the timing belt, front struts, pump, power window motor. He ended up spending less $ on his car, though he had more problems, if not for my tranny, I'd be pretty happy with my Maxima.

But another thing, I suppose Lexus repairs cost more $ then a regular Toyota, or a regular Nissan. So he won't be far behind. Also, the more bullsh-t details the car has, the more problems it is bound to have. BUT, I wouldn't mind having a nice IS300, There is a guy I always see in Brooklyn Ny, he got a new IS300 in bright yellow with tints, that thing is SOOOO HOT! he gets all the chicks

Yeah, maybe it is more reliable...

But he's gonna pay a lot more when he does have to take it in to the shop. Lots of upscale car dealers(Lexus, Infiniti, Acura) charge a fortune just for regular service stuff, because they 'know' they can do it. They figure that since the owners could afford the car, they can afford to get overcharged, too.

I was in it Friday night

The thing rides like its on rails... It has FAT 17" rims from the factory, really cool tail and fog lights, and the leather interior has suede mesh inserts. It feels really quick when you take off, much quicker than my car. I like it, but not for $34,000.

My Maxima is a POS!!!!!!

I can't believe how big of a POS it is. I've got to change the oil every 6000 miles (Mobil 1), I've got to add gas, I've got to buy new struts after 60000 miles on 1.7" drop springs, I've got to get new 215/60R15 tires.

J/K. I've had absolutely no problems with my car and neither did the prior owner. I beat on it pretty hard (20 1/4 mile passes), I nearly powershift it on my runs and I dump or slip the clutch. The clutch is still perfect and never slips. The shocks are toast though. No real rattles at all unless I hit a pretty bog bump which ain't bad for a car on stiffer springs and 17" wheels. Compared to my buddies 98 BMW 328 or 94 Supra TT, my Max is rock solid.

I had a lot of problems with my Honda. Both the Toyota's my family own have been 100% perfect. A Corrolla that's driven to the MAX with 70K miles, and not once has anything gone and it still drives like new. a 35K 98 4Runner which ain't too bad. However, our 2001 CL Type-S after 1000 miles developed a horrible squeak in the rear. I fixed it after an hour of taking apart the rear deck lid. (Other than that it's been fine). However, my Integra GSR Sedan had the radiator die at 45K miles, Clutch Throw-Out at 45K, Clutch Master Cylinder at 55K, and the water pump blew at 60K (the weekend before it was due to be changed), and it developed so many squeaks. It was stolen with 65K miles on it and now I drive the Maxima. The Maxima engine feels like a brand new engine. My friend has a 97 GLE with 80K miles on it. It's never been serviced, just oil changes, and it runs like the day it did when it was bought. He also, redlines often and doesn't change the oil as much as he should.
The 4Runner V6 with 35K miles definately feels not new. It makes more noise and doesn't deliver the power as well, even after the 30K tuneup, where my friends 80K GLE's V6 feels brand new still.

My cousin sold her 94 Lexus IS 300 last year with 260'000 miles. Besides regular maintainence she just replaced the compressor on her AC. It does share a lot of parts with the Camry, but it does look better. Hey I love my Max plus I have a good looking car and a little money in the bank!

About 6 months before I got the Maxima I was set on getting a 93 Lexus sc400...great looking car...fast...fun to drive...found out servicing costs and almost had a heart attack...If I remember right the timing belt was around $1400(Canadian).....Altho the Nissan Dealer isn't exactly cheap either.

My cousins 99 Max is run H-A-R-D.

All of the time.
Hard take offs, hard braking, violent upshifts.
Races anything and everyone -and his track record is pretty good-
It scares everyone traveling with him not to mention the other cars on the road.
To demonstrate the redline limiter he will absolutley floor the enigine in neutral while parked.
The RPM needle just bounces off of the 6500 mark.
Neat demostration but you couldn't pay me to do this to my Max.
Yet he has the same miles as do I and he is still running strong. No problems whatsoever on either part.
I am anxious for the next year to pass - we both put around 50,000 miles per year on our cars -
I drive like a granny - who occasionally takes on some speed
He drives like the Devil himself. We will see.
