Gassy Climate control?

Heres the problem.....I turn on the auto climate control, and the interior of the car, within about 30 seconds, starts smelling like gas......... The only way to get rid of the odor is to turn off the climate control (even the fan) . Then the smell of course goes away. The car also's been burning a LOT more gas "coincidently". The obvious question is where is the "missing" gas coming from. I SINCERELY DOUBT its a problem that can lead to my car exploding, but still.....it sucks that in the middle of a Chi-Town summer, I'm reduced to dropping the windows and sweating. Has anyone else experinced these conditions, and if/what did you do to fix it?
