Hey everyone is this Trans worth it?????????
Hey everyone is this Trans worth it?????????
Alright... heres the story... my trans is crapping out... i found another one with get this 90 miles!!! The place actually bought it in 1998 from a wrecked car.....But heres the catch....its been sitting in their warehouse for 7 years.... would that be a problem???? I meas as long as it has trans fluid in it, i should be ok right? Its 550$ i want to go and pick it up on Friday
It's not like an engine -- it won't magically start sucking after sitting around for a while.
Drain the fluid, put new fluid in, run it for a few hundred miles (take it nice and easy!), and then drain and refill again. Should be fine.

its an auto trans..... he said that when they got it 7 years ago the insurance company said that i was pulled from a 98 max with 90 miles on the spedo cuz it crashed during a test drive or something... thats what i was told... he also has a trans with 5k miles on it as welll...
Depends on the type of impact. If it was a front end collision, there's more risk of drivetrain damage. I pulled my 5spd trans from a car that had been broadsided and passed on numerous cheaper 5spds that were in involved in accidents that involved the front end. And yeah, lemme know if you want to buy mine. 83K miles, three passes at the track and for 33K miles, it had a tranny cooler. No signs of slippage or anything unusual.
Eek. An auto trans just might magically start sucking after sitting around for years.
Or maybe I just think that cuz I think autos just always suck (what's up Chickan, lol).
Seriously though... there are a LOT more moving parts in an auto, and if the tranny fluid has dripped off or dried up (which it likely has), just running it for a while could wear it down like crazy. It's not like a manual, which you can really go easy on for a while (i.e. baby all your shifts). So, although I could just as easily be wrong, my instinct is that you might not want to touch it.
But then again... I never want to touch autos.
