brake question?????????

i have a 99 se-l and i dont think that my brake a performing as well as they are supposed to, especially at the pedal. meaning that the pedal is very squishy instead of being firm. it becomes firm at a certain point, but u actually have to push the pedal a little bit before it gets there, and until the brakes start to bite. i just want to know if thats because of the old lines, the fluid, or is it because that is how everyones brakes is.

My brakes bite as soon as I hit the pedal, it might be because the lines are flexing. Or the fluid is low.

It could be a combination of old fluid and air in the brake lines.

If your pads are really worn your fluid will also likely be low. Check your fluid level first, if it's fine I'd still go ahead and pull the wheels and check your pads.

This is a very typical brake driveability symptom, meaning, not out of the ordinary at all. Often times, this is alleviated by having the brake system bled.

If it is effecting your braking performance in an unsafe manner, I suggest you see a mechanic immediately. If it is just a squishy-pedal feeling, but your car still brakes firmly, than perhaps the next time you have your brakes serviced, you should have them bled as well.

Make sure you pads are in good shape.
Check to see if the calipers are moving freely on the guide pins.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic by nature which means it absorbs moisture and breaks down. Your brake fluid should be FLUSHED every 2 - 3 years to maintain a firm pedal and keep the system clean. Don't just bleed your brakes, flush the system every time you change pads.
