Realized how dumb I really am....
Decided to switch over to synthetic oil today. Went to Mr. Lube (got a $8 coupon YAY) which just covers the cost of a Nissan oil filter (the guy insisted that it was a Nissan filter). Long story cut short...I paid $80 to have it. To later realized I can actually go to a Loblaws (Grocery superstore) and buy the same Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 for $25, all 4 litres of it.
From now on, I will be doing that myself except for the occassional engine flush (car remains on...I'd rather have some play with that). The money I save can go towards a K&N oil filter (I'm a real sucker for K&N but whatever) and perhaps going to a better synthetic oil. Now I'm going to be a sucker again for asking this but....
What do you guys think of Quakerstate's Q synthethic oil. Advertiments sure makes it look tempting. Just to let you know I live in Canada, so finding Amzoil is HARD! I think the next best thing I can find might be the Mobil 1 Extended 7500 on...Just a thought

its like this. the mobil 1 synthetic is good for i believe around 8k. if you get the extended one to 12k, you're goign to have to find a filter that can last that long. i personally do'nt knwo a filter that can last that long. n why would you go there to get an oil change when you can do it yourself!!!! ahh!!!!!!!!

I never trust those lube places.
I have used Redline oil w/ OEM filters for years with great results. It's pretty much the best combo out there. Change it every 5k or so.
Order the Redline at myoilshop.com.

The best bang for the buck synthetic oil in Canada is Esso XD3 Extra, 0W30, PAO, full synthetic available only at Esso bulk plants. Research this on bobistheoilguy.com. You can buy a litre for under Cdn$5/litre including all taxes, but the price is going up modestly by the end of the month.
This oil allows for excellent cold startups and extended OCIs.
A lot of BITOGers are getting this oil and deep sixing the Mobil 1. Amsoil and Redline are a waste of money compared to the XD3.
I am running AutoRX through my engine right now and am switching to the XD3 when I'm done. Used Castrol GTX most of the time since day 1.

Oil and Oil filters are made to last at least 12000 miles. I know this because that's how often my mom remembers to change the oil in her caravan and nothing happens. The oil is a little dirty but by no means is it black.
Car companies tend to be a little more conservative. They recommend you change your anywhere from 5 months/5000 miles up to 5 months/7500 miles. I dont know where this mythical policy came that you must change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles. It's definitely not from an engineer unless you drive in heavy traffic, at very high speeds, or in a very dirty environment. Very dirty as in a dirt road for at least half the time you drive your car.
The 7500 mile change interval is for regular oil. A lot of you use mobil 1, semi synthetic, and some even use Redline oil. I personally think these premium oils are good for at least 12000 miles. 10,000 miles would be a conservative change time.
For those of you who use these "premium" oils and change them at 5000 miles, you're basically paying double for an oil change because 50% of your oil life is never used.
Some people change their oil as soon as it gets a little dark. Oil has detergents. These detergents clean engine parts and ensure smooth flow. Just because it's a little dark doesn't mean it lubricates poorly or below minimum standards.
I change my oil every 6 months regardless of mileage. It's worked for me for a very long time. I use semi synthetic oil because my car has 80,000 miles and a purolator filter.
If I drove a ferrari, i'd consider mobil 1. I dont really know what benefit a synthetic has over regular oil in terms of how an engine runs on one vs the other. Maybe someone can post how their motor ran before synthetic oil and after?

Pokki, does your Mr. Lube carry Mobil 1? I think the one up here only has the Castrol Syntec blend...thats the only one on their menu anyway. I used to go there, but now I get my Mobil 1 at Canadian Tire and just have my mechanic change it.

I switched over to synthetic at about 100k because I know my car had no leaks and it still doesn't. i've been on full synth since Feb. I get better gas mileage and i'm using the 5w-30. I used to take it to wally world and have them do it but you don't even have to jack the car up to change the oil (if you know what you are doing), the oil filter is like right there! You are better off saving $80 to get 2 tanks of gas or something.

Yup, they had Castrol Synthetic blend or Mobil 1 SuperSyn. Nothing more...I wanted to try Q from Quakerstate, but it wasn't offered. And they DO CARRY AUTHENTIC Nissan OEM filters. Someone doubted that a local lube shop would have that.

So the 0W30 is good all year round? Can I just get it at an Esso station? I don't know anything about an Esso plant here. I'll have to find out where one is.
BTW, I just hit 100,000 km too! I took a pic of the odometer.

No you can't get it at an Esso station. Look in the telephone book for the nearest Esso bulk plant or inquire at your local Esso station where it is.
