Muffler Questions

After 171,500 miles the stock muffler is starting to show signs of wear. Its not close to the critical point just yet so I thought I would begin my research to make an informed purchase decision. I noticed that my 1999 Max GLE has two mufflers. One is a smallish, long tube up close to the cat and the other is the big regular muffler at the rear of the car. Can I remove the smaller one close to the cat and just run with one? Does the car really need two mufflers? Is there any performance gain if one is removed? Will I damage the vehicle or impair it's performance running just one?

TIA for the input. it seems odd to have two mufflers.

That smaller "muffler" by the cat you that you speak of is not a muffler. It's your resonator, which is sort of like a muffler in that it also helps deaden some sound. Yes you can run a straight pipe and not use it but I wouldn't recommend it as using a b-pipe with no resonator almost always = bees. As for the rear section, if you're looking for quiet then either OEM or dynomax. If you want loud get just about anything else I have a Borla and I love it

I just removed my custom resonated b pipe with dynomax sturbo which was on fot the past year, left on the y pipe and went back to a stock/oem bosal cat back, and a couldn'nt be happier!! After a year of vibration, drones and "hole in the muffler type sound", I finally have my silky smooth, luxury VQ maxima back. It still sounds good when you are at WOT but it is real quiet and smooth the rest of the time.

psssh! what are you talkin about? about 150,000 miles, a Max is just barely broken in! take care of it and it'll last much longer than you would think.

Is the magnaflow a direct bolt on without any welding required? Otherwise, what other mufflers are direct bolt ons without modification....

The magnaflow is universal, so it had to be welded on.

in fact...i still have the magnaflow muffler in my garage. i had it for sale in the 4th gen classified and it's not sold yet. i offered $90 +shipping, but i guess i can lower it to $80 + shipping to ur door if you want it. it's a great muffler PM me if u are interested.

My stock muffler was rusted out so I just bought a Borla muffler off ebay for $69. I have an otherwise stock exhaust system and I'm happy with how it sounds. Its louder than before but still quiet...just deeper and more sporty. Its stainless steel too so I don't have to worry about rusting. Both the muffler and tip weren't exact fits so the muffler shop had to to a little bit of welding but it was pretty simple. They stuck the tip out a little too far though...

Tuko - I agree with 86Maxima96...keep a Max maintained and she will run a looooooooong time. I use all synthetic fluids and she runs great. My last tank of gas I got 26mpg and it was a combination of city and highway driving.
