Shift lock

I dont know if the shift can be removed.....i didnt think anything much when i was able to get out of park even when the key or brake isnt in but then i cleaned a a 97 or 98 I30 and i couldnt move the gear out of park until i hit the brake.....is the 95 max suppose to lock and if it is how can i fix that...Btw when i go into drive gear it doesnt seem to lock in very good...i mean it feels loose....i now its not really suppose to lock in drive but at least feel secured...hopefully someone understands me

Yes, the shifter should be locked unless you press the brake pedal. You might have a bad switch at the brake pedal or a stuck solenoied (under the shifter center console).
