I just bought some 17" rims off of ebay for my 96 GLE to replace the old honey combs which were badly damaged. (ASA 17" EM9 I think) They fit on the car pretty well. However, the central hub is not a snug fit. If I just set the rim on the studs, the rim actually rests on the threads, as opposed to the hub. When I tighten down the lug nuts, they pull the rim into place properly.

I remember reading somewhere that the hub is what really carries the weight of the car, not the studs.

Should I worry about this, or is this the usual case with aftermarket rims.

You need adapters that match your bore size to that of the rim. When I bought my new rims 1-2 weeks ago they came with the adapters (they're metal rings that fit over the hub). I REALLY hope you aren't driving your max right now with those wheels on because the studs could snap anytime and you'd be screwed!

you need hub rings.

go to your local rim/tire place and they should be able to get you a set. for ~10$

Since I just put them on today, I haven't been driving on them yet, except for a short spin to check them out. I guess I will be driving the other Max until I can get the rings.

Isn't shoulder of the lug nuts is what holds the car up and the purpose of the hub center rings is so that they allign the wheel/studs straight when you mount them? Check out your steelies or even your spare and notice how sloppy the hub fittment is and notice how the shoulder of the nuts match up to the face of the wheel
