Legality Question
May want to check your local laws as they vary from state to state, but most likely, redding out just the amber will be fine. If you red out the reverse lights, that is probably illegal.
I know there are a bunch of NJ members on the org. Have anyof you tried reddign out the reverse lights too and tried going through inspection? Ive seen a couple cars completely redded out. let me know how things turned out for you
I think it would be a safe guess to assume that the reverse lights CANNOT be redded out. The turn signal can be. There are many cars (domestic and imports) that don't have amber rear turn signals right from the factory.

The turn signals are OK, but the reverse lights are a big no no. You could do it, but you will end up getting a ticket, and if your lucky not to get one, you wont pass inspection.
Also if you get into some kind of accident because of it, it's going to be your fault for sure.

When redding just the amber out is the color way off from the red on the tails already? and if it is way off has anyone found a way to get it to match a little better? im thinkin of leaving the white white and redding the amber. If anyone has pictures of redded or modded tails from a 95/96 please post thanks
Ive seen alot of jettas with red tails, no amber or clear, and they look like they are stock, and the drivers don't look like the modding type... What if you smoked the white part? NJ has some crazy rules it seems.
For the color to match, you just need to get the right stuff. Most people prefere the translucent vynle because it wont peel. You can also use testors candy apple red spray paint, but you will need to use clear coat so that it will prolong its life, but eventually the weather will make it crack and peel. If you want some real answers about legality, go into the NJ regional section of the forums and ask there.
As for pictures of redded out tails, just look around, plenty of people have done it.

it will match almost perfectly, but IT WILL CRACK AND PEEL. I suggest you go into the how-tos and read how to do it will translucent vynle. the spray paint is NOT weather proof, and the clear coat only helps it a little bit.
the vynle how ever is an absolute perfect match and will not look like **** after 3 weeks.

no, it won't. two of my friends have testors candy apple red tails, both for over a year, and the paint is still perfect on both. one has some clearcoat failure because he didn't let the paint sit long enough before putting the clear on (and the florida sun), but it could be fixed with a little bit of wet sanding and a couple more coats of clear.
i prefer the vinyl method, personally, because it leaves the lights looking a lot shinier and more "stock looking..." but don't give this guy bad information just because you're biased against the mod he wants to do.
When did I ever say I was biased against the mod? I am not giving this guy bad information, I am speaking from experience. I had this done on my car until the testors wore off, now I'm going to do it again with vynle.
Testors paint is not weather proof. If you want it to hold up you have to spray on a very thin coat, but when you do that, it turns out grainy and doesnt look good. If you want a nice shiney finish you need to use thicker coats, but then it will crack and peal.
There are plenty of people who claim testors holds up and there are plenty of people who say it wont. If you want a sure thing, use vynle.

yeah, to do the mod correctly you have to spray light coats. and i mentioned that this caused the lights to stop looking shiny. so... we're not really disagreeing about anything, i just don't want this guy to think that guaranteed, sure thing, the paint will crack if you use testors, which just isn't true.
