You guys should take note of this and maybe be more carefull about your Maxima's anti-theft security.

I have seen that I can open my girlfriend's '95 Altima with different Nissan keys. I have also during the yeas been able to open different Nissans and other japanese cars by using a similar Nissan key. Sometimes it would be real easy and others I had to take a little bit more time to work the lock with the different key. Also, it has worked with GMC-made cars (by using a similar GMC key, of course). Basically, anybody can break into a car by using his own key.

I think it has a great deal to do with the lock being worn out, maybe it involves some luck with the design of the used to break in being similar to the original key.

Probably the best way to prevent a thief from using any Nissan key to break into your Maxima is to change the locks. Bummer for me and my Maxima because it probably costs a lot of work and money to change all 4 locks.

Any ideas? How much does a lock set cost anyway?

yea really worn down keys will open some locks. i remember there were these two cars, IDENTICAL to each other, parked at the mall. i was waiting for this old lady to pull out so i can get her spot. she had trouble opening her door and kept wiggling the keys. she got in the car..... 10 seconds later..... gets out, closes the door, and goes to the car next to it. She opens up the car next to the car she just got into (her real car), turns over the engine and drives off. i was dying laughing. to see the look on her face goin from car to car. ok this was pointless.

 

A thief gets in your car no matter how good the locks are.
Any car, let me repeat that, ANY CAR, no matter how good the security system is can be stolen if it's wanted.

 

haha when we usta install we would keep the wires close to the bottom of the car and clip um when they bought dvd, copied keys helped too......ummm j/k

Mine neither. I haven't been able to figure out why I can't unlock the trunk with the keys, but the keyfob button and the inside release work fine....

How much does it cost to get the locks changed?

 

Dont mean to hijack the thread or spam, but my dad had a civic that could be started with virtually any key.

Anybody? Because my brother got the ignition key changed but not the doors or trunk changed. So if my remote doesn't work I'm S.O.L.

 

older Saabs will do the same. you can open almost any older saab with any older saab key..

 

IIRC, Nissan used a different lock/key for the trunk. The ignition/door lock key will not open the trunk. The original trunk key has been lost over time...
If this is false, just correct it, but I am almost positive I read that on the forums...

 

IIRC my 3rd Gen had two keys. One key fit everything and the 2nd key -- the red key -- fit only the glove box and the trunk; not the ignition.

My 4th gen only has one key. It fits everything.

My 3rd gen was a whole lot more car than my 4th gen but I won't get into that here... I miss my dead '93. <sniffle>

 

One time I locked my keys in the car while I was at the dealership. Pretty stupid, but probably the best place to do it. When the tech came out to help me, he brought a handful of keys with him. He said that around 1 in 20 of all Nissan keys would open my door. Said a different way, your key could open up to 5% of all Nissans. The ignition was a different story, where they keys are much more specific.

I know personally that I've unlocked and rolled down the windows of other Maximas with my key fob.

Don't feel too bad guys, because the tech said that Ford f-150s have only about 4 different key designs to open their doors. Don't know if this guy is full of it or not, but it's pretty creepy!

Prime reason to shave the doors.. Get rid of the handles and locks .
Do the same on the trunk.

 

That's what I love about my alarm. If it's armed and you try to unlock the door with the key it won't unlock.

i can drive and unlock and drive my frends 94 altima with my maxima keys

 

Not mine!!! Besides the fact that they will have to tow it to steal it(cause of all the cutoff switches,etc etc, they would have to go through these "bishes" !! Good luck to them !!!

 

hahaha! The other day i was at a friends house, and when i unlocked my car it popped the trunk on the old altima across the street. gotta love redundancy
