how much stuff have you relpaced on your car?

ok.. this thread will either make me feel a little bit better, or make me want to inject bleach into my arms... heres my long, LONG list..

both rear hubs, both rear calipers, both rear abs sensors, and the emergency brake cable.. ( 3 weeks after i bought the car )

all four struts, (swapped from gr2's to illumina's cause i couldnt take it anymore, it was embarassing to have anyone in the car) front mounts, rear mounts (put in extended travels), strut bearings , strut boots, and every peice of rubber, plastic and whatever associated with the springs and struts. its a few hundered $$$ in b.s. factory stuff..

rims and tires, old rims peeled and bent, tires were shot

2 intermediate pipes for the exhaust, left control arm, starter, brake hardware for all four brakes ( they were all missing), pads front and rear, right front wheelbearing, hood struts, 2 sets a wipers, sparks plugs, fuel filter, coil pack, egr tubes cleaned.

2 brains for the alarm

about 6 alignments, and countless balancings.

just hand installed- both lca's (so they were both the same) inner / outter tie rods, stabalizer links, and axles.

cars going back tomorrow cause now theres another noise coming from the front.. i think a new axle went bad.. and the rotors warped..

so if you think you had problems with your car.. share it and try and make me feel better.. oh.. and by the way.. this is my second 4th gen.. ive only had this one for a lil less than 2 years.

Well, it is a long list, but we are talking about a car that is soon to be 11 years old. I don't know what your mileage is, but I'm assuming it's over 100k. All that stuff you listed appears to be wear and tear. Stuff that would go on any car. The difference being that all that stuff would have went at 60k, if it were American made. I have a 99 SE and have not replaced anything but a cat hanger, a tune-up, 6 coils. I also have 119k. But, I wouldn't worry man, it's all wear and tear. Just be sure when you replace these things to use Genuine Nissan parts, not Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Napa, Advance etc. Don't feel bad, your Max is 10 years old, things wear out.

i was recently going through all the reciepts that my dad has kept since he bought the car back in '94 and i was amazed at how many things have been replaced on the car. add to that all the aftermarket parts i've put on since i've had the car for the last 2 years. also just today i found out that the reason the alignment has been way off is that the lower counrol arm, steering knuckle, and front strut are all bent. that's another $800 right there that i'll have to shell out before the end of the week. i just paid of my credit card last week and looks like i'm right back in debt as of this friday

I've had mine since June 2004.

Done, besides the usual oil changes and etc:
-Tires
-Rear rotors & pads
-Coils (6)

Needs to be done:
-Front rotors & pads

I have complained about my car a lot because it hasn't seemed as reliable as my previous car (Corolla), but looking back on it nothing major has really gone wrong. It was just the stupid coils going out one by one that pissed me off most of the time. haha

to make the the list short, everything replaced so only the 4th gen body is stock. everything else is 2k2 and upgraded with aftermarket stuff like suspension, brakes, exhaust, and etc. dont feel bad. i love working on my max even if i am fixing stuff. some people tell me that its too much money and not worth it but i tell them otherwise.

Thanks I keep reading other lists and remember things that I had forgotten - so I've had to update it a few times... I just added CV boots to the list!

I might be heading up to Minneapolis on the weekend of the 8-10 of October!! I went to college up there.... just heading up to reminice and hang out.

I've done one full tune up, replaced the brakes once, three sets of tires, put a Warpspeed Y pipe on, an O2 sensor, replaced all the coil packs and the H&R / Illuminas suspension set up.

Thats it so far.

I've only had the car five months. Nothing covered by the lemon law has failed yet. But..
hood struts: first time I popped it at home, worked on the lot
wipers: first rain
rear window tint: when removing dealer tag
AC stinks when it rains
God I love this car.

Well, mine was crap when I bought it and it's still crap and I still need a new Y (1 in deep dent) and exhaust (3 in straight)! But what can you expect for $2500 right?

ES motor mounts.... $80
AC condensor.... $70
Tires.... $300 (Friend hooked me up)
Pass headlight... $50
Rear Pass Caliper and IAT....$60
MEVI just for fun... $430

Beating the crap out of a cocky cuzzin who just spent $8500 on a Civic SI and $2000 in mods.......

Priceless....

I'm not at home right now, so I don't have the exact list, but here goes:

96 SE 5 Speed
Purchased June/July of 04 at 130k miles or so

Tranny swapped FIVE times by wholesaler I bought the car from, finally got a solid tranny from a 1998 with 40k miles. Free
Clutch - 5th gen. setup (3rd on the board that I know of to have done it) in December or 04
Bose HU crapped out, replaced with Kenwood
Torn Shift/ebrake boots replaced with jujeracing boots
Two shift *****, still haven't found one I liked
Air (k&n), Fuel, Oil Filters replaced
PCV valve
spark plugs
rotors and pads (x-drilled/slotted w/ Raybestos pads)
FSTB
Tires/balance/alignment (Toyo Proxes)
Used IACV
Used Starter (not even in the car, pm me if you need one, actually don't, I can't send it to you from NY)
Probably a good $500 spent on detailing products
Tranny fluid with Redline MT-90
Various tools
edit: forgot about Knock Sensor

Now the car needs: driverside axle
I stripped the bolts/nuts when installing my FSTB, but they are completely seated, so that eventually needs to be fixed (yes, I was using a torque wrench)
I have a vacuum leak, probably coming from my LIM-UIM gasket which creates a sparatic, and uncomfortable near stalling driving experience. This may be my chance to go 00vi though, something I gotta look into...
I think that may be it....can't remember
edit: also forgot about my Vehicle Speed Sensor code (0104)
editx2: forgot about antenna motor assembly which needs replacement since the mast is broken inside of it. Yes, I have taken it apart.

In two weeks:
Clutch
Tranny

Before I owned it:
Starter
Alternator
Ball joints
Tires.

I'd say overall this car has had a good life. A new clutch & tranny are the last things on my list for now.(I hope.)

plugs once @ 100K
fuel filter once @ 100K
air filter as needed, easy to inspect
both front o2 sensors as they fail
radiator drain/fill, 100K
Manual transmission drain/fill once when replacing Passenger CV at 160K and again with Drivers side CV.
knock sensor 173k
egr cleaning, 119k
new tires, 90k, 150k, not because of tread, replaced cause of noise.
balancing/rotation every 5 K or so
Front brake pads, around 90K, 140K and 160K
Rears brake pads around 120 K
Accessory belts 174K
Oil change and filter every 3K
KS 174K

Forgot about the starter around 160K

Above mostly are guesses on mileage.
Car is the most maintenance free car I have ever owned for this many miles. Bought with 44K and since that time I would est. 90% of the miles are highway.

Standard Transmission, SE, has around 176K

I think maybe the original post was asking about things that were replaced b/c they either broke or needed upgrading. In any case, I count myself to be very lucky. 233,xxx miles:
Other than regular wear and tear like brakes and oil...
Used tranny at 100,xxx
2 clutches
new t'stat
new starter
new rotors all around (here I've replaced the fronts once already b/c of track events)
O2 sensor
(the knock sensor died a long time ago and the car runs fine for me anyway, but i'll list it anyway)
clutch slave
Bose HU replaced with aftermarket unit
I'll finally replace the battery next week. I bought it in 2000. Interstate Batteries rule.

Suspension upgrades are on the way, but as far as things going wrong, my list is much shorter than many people...
keeping fingers crossed!

Also replaced windshield wipers twice and added an FSTB. Professionally detailed at least 7 times as I'm too lazy now.

new battery
blew sidewall out of right rear tire, used spare and bought a 2nd hand tire as spare
left front head light
rear brake calipers and brake pads as a result of not using parking brake,50% left on pads before changing
PCV valve 2 weeks ago (didn't need it) before emissions testing
fuel filter @ 35K
radiator flush @ 35K and 52K
replaced transaxle gear oil
flushed power steering fluid
bled brakes
turkey baster to clutch receptacle.
AutoRX added to crankcase
Chevron Techron added to fuel system

61K on car, original spark plugs and Goodyear Eagle RSA tires, Budget Y-pipe, K&N panel filter, better fuel economy than 99.5% of the VQ30DEs on the Board and fast as h#ll..

Alright - so what's with all the suspension and brake parts having to be replaced? Why would calipers and discs need replacing - lack of maintenance and grinding the piston into the disc, or warping and fluid leaks?? Control arms - didn't know those were serviceable items - bushings, sure....but the entire control arm?

On my friend's 99 Max w/ 105K mi, the downstream O2 sensor was replaced, the KS and that's it, other than brake pads and oil/filter changes. The knock sensor failures seem to be a real common (expensive) thing on these engines (Nissan should recall them). Should I mention having a small savings account just for the car b/c it sounds like these cars are a bit heavy on the wallet for repairs.

1. Most of these cars have 100k+ on them. It's time for new struts at the least. Other suspension wear items include mounts, and strut bearings. Nothing out of the ordinary. A lot of the suspension parts you see listed are from owners dropping their cars or trying to get a sportier ride. Don't infer all the suspension work as "springs broke, struts were shot.. most if it was not MUST DO type stuff.

2. The rear calipers are prone to seizing only because the parking brake is not used regularly by a lot of drivers. The other reason the rear calipers fail is if the parking brake cables start binding, ruining the caliper. There is some poor design involved in the parking brake cable routing/brackets. They are very likely to be bent when the car is put on a lift.

3. At 100k, if the rotors have been turned once, it's probably not a bad idea of replace the rotors altogether (at the next brake job). Again a lot of the brake work has been enhancements - drilled/slotted rotors, performance pads, etc. At 100k+, most of these cars have had at least 2 brake jobs.

4. LCAs - its easier for most of us to just replace the entire LCA rather than try to swap out the bushings and ball-joints. We can get entire LCAs for 70 bucks - including new bushings and a ball-joint. Just replacing the bushings/ball-joint on your old one will cost you about the same... so some of us opt to just pop on the entire LCA.

Overall, I wouldn't call my car heavy on the wallet at all. Even if I had paid someone to do all the things I have done. Mostly everything on my list, spare a handful of items were done by choice or as preventative maintenance or at one of the regular maintenance intervals. There were only a few real "failures", e.g. starter, o2 sensor, knock sensor, bose headunit. I would say thats pretty awesome for an 11 year old car with 123,000 miles of Chicago roads and weather under it's belt.

Cheers.
