it's distracting, and drivers following you might think you're getting off the brakes when the light blinks off. is it kind of dumb? yeah, but you really can't trust most of the people on the road to understand what's going on.

For what purpose would you want to make it do that?

Cant think of what I've seen but I've see a few from cars to trucks with blinking 3rd brake lights, a couple are the led strip blinking, an couple the bar blinking. I dont see it too often but I have.

I dont see how its illegal as long as you have a set of brake lights lit up that dont blink, in addition to the 3rd.

I actualy see it done on alot of bikes. Gets drivers attention when your slowing down and anything to get a person to see a bike is a good thing. But to answer your question. Yes you can. Theres a company out there that sells a kit, I dont remember the name but Im sure you can find it on google. Theres a couple of dealers in NC that use it on test drives, then take it off when they sell the cars.

I thought the same thing, but I found a quote online from a study done by Mercedes - Safety Proven: "DaimlerChrysler will introduce flashing CHMBLs for 2006 on the Mercedes S-Class, followed by the CL-Class. Their studies showed that drivers react 0.2sec faster to a Flashing brake light compared to a normal one; which corresponds to a 15ft reduction in stopping distance from 50mph, or about one car-length advantage

Also, according to this guy's blog, apparently they were installed in some '99 VW's.

They started doing that in 99-00 ish, they were trying to mandate it for all makes and models as a safety thing.

Please don't do it, it is annoying.

you would need some sort of relay for it to work similar to the relay for the alarm beep mod.

I'd get into the beater.. 1976 Pontiac lemans... Find you can Smash your ride.

no seriosuly.. If you actually did do this you must put it on a switch so that blinking doesn't always happen.. This way you can have it work at show's and stuff.. If you didn't do the switch and had the wiring static then your asking for trouble. A ticket would be iminent.. But god forbid someone rear ended you it would be your fault and they might ever say you did this will Malice.

i just liked the fact that it drew extra attention to the fact that he was breaking, i guess if its that annoying to that many people ill just skip it.

i was behind a late 90s mustang the other day: he had his signal on for turning right, and the amber was going rice fast, and the reverse lights were blinking as well. -that- was weird

the cars from the factory blink only a few times then stay lit steady. i think i saw it on a GM truck once or twice. not very common. its just like a siren.... annoying but it sure as hell gets you attention. its very effective imo. most people on the road need more help since they suck at driving anyhow.

blinking 3rd brake light is a stupid idea. it'll distract following cars very much. of course it can be done. go read an electronics book, you'll find that all you need is a small capacitor, inductor, and wires. they can be found in radio shack for real cheap. all you got to do is run a parallel circuit out of the capacitor and the inductor with the lightbulb, and you'll have it blinking. but i see no point in doing this mod. it's a waste of time and will cause distractions.

I make my own third braklight blink. When I'm approaching a traffic light, I don't just step on the brake and keep it on until I stop, I pump the brake pedal as I'm stopping lightly just to make my brakelights blink, as to get and keep the drivers attention behind me. In case I see they're not paying full attention. Something I was taught in driving school.

uhhmm, so you only look at the third brake lite on the vehicle in front of you? only third light blinks. The others are steady. The domestics have them, especially on the trucks and vans. Makes sense to me. Anything that will get someone to pay attention so they don't run into you will help as far as I'm concerned.

I'm sure any cop out there would love to show you his blinking lights too.

Blinking anything is pretty much illegal except for teh turn signals, so dont do it.

I just don't get it. I have seen SEVERAL domestic cars with this feature. The third brake light blinks for 10 - 15 times and then stays lit. If they come this way from the factory, then how can they be illegal. Also the guys whining about them being annoying. Lets see your mood when some one rear-ends you. If that annoying blinking light prevents that rear-ending, why the whining?

Let's see, this blinking feature has been seen ONLY on domestic vehicles? If it's only these cars, then being American, it's probably a malfunction.

And how many American cars are really american? Let's see, as far as CARS go, Chevys are being built on Opel or Saab chassis, Fords are using Mazdas, Nissan is a FRENCH owned company btw, and most of the Japanese cars being bought in this country are built in Tennessee....What does being American have to do with it? It's just an idea that no one else is utilizing..

you are using the term "several domestics" very loosely. could you mention auto makers and models please? perhaps years made? i have never seen one.

I've seen alot of motorcycles with this feature. I grabs your attention.

But as for cars I think it sould only activate under sudden hard braking. The new BMW 7 Series has a feature where the harder you press on the pedal, the brighter the brake lights get. Good idea.

Don't know the exact models and years but I have seen this on Some Ford SUVs and Trucks, Chevy trucks, Saturn SUV I think, some Caddy SUVs etc. Its more than one model/manufacturer. Next time I see one, I will be sure to get the make/model but I don't want to stop the guy and ask him his model year.

I just saw a Honda Oddysey being driven by an old asian grandmother type with a blinking 3rd light yesterday. So it might have been stock.

I'm kinda 50/50... maybe a car the size of a max wouldn't need it so badly, but mine's tiny and drivers have a habit of somehow not noticing I'm there at all. People just sort of merge into me every day. I'd def do it to a bike though, same with some sort of toggle for blinking headlights during the day.

Nope. Odyssey does not come with a blinking 3rd light from the factory (at least until the 2004 model year). I frequent their Odyclub forum too.
