Converting Auto to Manual

Well...i recently bought my car auto...figured alright, maxima is fast but i really dont wanna hook it up as racer or anything, although i do wanan combine style and performance and all in all decided after realizing im tired of having to hold my girlfriends hand while driving that i want a stick ( that and other reasons too ...lmao .. ) ...i know they're probably a billion threads about this..sue me...i cant search...and im curious to know as to the cost and anyone who has done this what were some problems faced...where would i go to do such a thing and do you feel that having a auto vs manual makes it that much more fun to drive your car?

Holy this thread is Tuesday ..

It will cost 4,000$ done right, it's not that much better because the gear ratios of the auto are sooooo much more comfortable.

You can go to the dealership, they will do it right.

I've done it, and I have extra misc parts f/s in the 4th gen f/s are.

Oh yeah, BTW, Maximas aren't fast.

I always let my girlfriend shift for me, she's gotta do something while she's down there.

You're in south plainfield, thats about 15 mins from me, if you're really serious and get the parts, i'll definitely help you out. I've done my own swap, and i'm sure i can get another one done, if not twice as fast.

Advance warning: Don't listen to the nay-sayers. A 5-speed swap is probably the best damn thing that'll ever happen to your car.

I got mine for $2500, parts and labor. Of course, that was with a really cheap junkyard tranny with 107k miles on it, and it had some pretty unhappy bearings in it after another 15k or so. That's a fairly common problem on these gearboxes.

When (not if... WHEN) you do your swap, do yourself a favor and grab the transmission and axles from an Infiniti I30 or Canadian Maxima with under 100k miles on it (both models use the same damn transmission). It will have a limited-slip differential, so you'll get better traction, and they won't have the bearing problems.

With that kinda gearbox, plan on $3k-$4k. Make DAMN SURE you're getting it done at a good shop, and whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE IT TO A BIG CHAIN SHOP (like AAMCO).

When you're done, you're welcome to come right back and tell us all about how much your girlfriend hates you because of how much more you're driving your car instead of paying attention to her.

Yup. The very top gears are fairly similar, but the lower gears on a 5-speed are definitely closer (and therefore more awesome, in case you were wondering ).

I noticed that my 4th gear on my auto (o/d) was a bit taller than my 5th gear in my manual. Maybe because of the TC lockup, but I know that my auto was better for highway crusing.

my posts dont mean much...done alot of work in ym car..just means that im acutally 18 and got my max a couple months ago and was referred to this forum from a fellow member would said it's a good community....but after reading the cost of actually doing it...vs tha cost i paid for my 98 max ( 1300 at a dealer auction, 120k miles, no dents, dings, clean ... GLE ) ...i would rather sell my car for the 6g's that i bluebooked the price at, and buy a stick...

Do us all a favor, before you go spend money on something like this donate the $20 so you can use the search function and see the 50000000 other threads about this subject. Best damn investment towards mod research you can make!

Britney Spears did that to a rented Ferrari 360 Spyder in Cali once a few years back. Careened across the highway and ground to a halt. Too bad she didn't hit anything.

MDeezy kinda comes off as someone who's at least smart enough not to date someone THAT dim-witted, though. So I'd say he's probably aight.

You never know, I agree with you about MDeezy though.

But all or most women have been known to snap. She might do it because he spends more time on here than he does with her, and grow jealous of the A32 and decide it's demise. At that point, MDeezy will just toss a 3.5 in thre ..

Here's something I always come back to. You know what the only thing is that's better than driving stick?

A girl who drives stick.

And you know, her putting her hand on yours while you drive is the next best thing.

MORAL OF THE STORY: 5-speed is awesome. If she don't dig it...

....

Too bad. Get it anyway.
