Remove both plastic things on both side that protect ecu. On the passengers side there is a wiring harness that you need to loosen with a 10mm socket, then there are 4 screws one on each corner of the ecu, unscrew those then slide the damn thing out

Wait, so you don't know what CEL is and tried to turn off your CEL light by poking in the wrong hole with a screw driver because you couldn't see 'cause it was dark, and don't know how to use a flash light, and also forgot what it looked like when you got to your car from your computer; and stuck it in there for about 3 minutes; and now your car won't start and also now trying to remove the ECU?? *whew*
Good luck. Don't blow up your car.

If you can't do a simple thing like turning a screw w/o messing anything up, what makes you certain you can replace an ECU? Not everything is based on book or technical knowledge....you also need to use common sense. Common sense to use a flash light when you know that you will be working on a sensitive piece of equipment such as an ECU, common sense to know that if the screw driver went in deep that you probably poked the wrong hole, and lastly common sense to know that this task is way beyond your ability. My suggestion, take your car or have it towed to an automotive electrical shop. Chances are you shorted your ECU and that will definitely be a costly one. Hope you learn your lesson from now on, taking shortcuts will only give you grief.

To pull the codes you should have turned the screw clockwise about 1/2 turn, paused 2 sec. and then turned back ccw until you hit the stop, about 1/2 turn. The screw turns very easily and you can feel the stops. Try going back to the clockwise stop and then backing off 1/2 turn the other way. I'm just guessin here but maybe you can find the run position. It's just a rotary switch in there that puts you in and out of test mode.

I'm a village idot. But my question is why can't Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts check for a CEL code on my '95 Max? Advanced Auto Parts told me they can't check CELs for cars that are older than '98. Autozone told me "you can only come here to have it checked on Sunday after 10am". I'm like WTF! Is it my understanding that there are two diff. scanners? But I'm really lost as to why Autozone can check it, but only on Sunday after 10am.

And as for this ECU issue...you should NOT be messing with your car! Upon looking at the picture on your computer screen couldn't you at least see and REMEMBER that the screw is on the SURFACE of the ECU? In other words...you DON'T poke into a hole to get to the screw? Here's some advice...never try to work on your max ever again. This is just as bad as this guy I delt with the other day at the shop I work at who came back after I put his spare on telling me I put his wheel on backwards. I asked him what he was talking about...and he pointed and showed me and was like "see it's different than the other wheels." I tried not to laugh and was like "ummm, that's your spare I put on...it's not going to look like your other wheels...."
It confuses me how some people in this world can survive...
