Crush test
That's exactly why I bought a 99. I think they reinforced everything more or something. I did tons of research before I got my car and after being in two accidents, crash tests are really important to me. Even the 4.5 gens didn't do the greatest, but they still scored well and judging by the results from accidents some .org'ers have been in, I feel pretty safe.

Anyone know how to reinforce the seat track? In the driver's side , the seat track will slide even in heavy BRAKING.Do you '97 ers have the seat track problem, or did Nissan fix that ?
depends on the body shop, they maybe cool and put on other parts they may not. if you got in an accident it maybe best to get an estimate get a check and take the car yourself to get fixed, or fix yourself. That way you can tell them what part numbers to use or just get it yourself.
Ive been in two accidents, one in my 96 and one in my 97. First accident guy tried to make a U-turn from the right hand lane right in front of me, and I T-boned his Chevy truck. Totaled both vehicles, but I walked away with just a sore back, I was going approx 40mph when I hit the brakes, barely had time to react. Second max, my 97... was traveling approx 40mph again, came to an intersection where cars can make left hand turns from opposing traffic, but are supposed to yield for oncoming traffic. Guy thought he could make it. I had a car to my left and no place to go. I hit my brakes but the roads were a little slick. Car to my left barely missed him, I caught him almost head on. Thought his truck was gonna flip... It slid on with one side in the air for about 15 feet before coming back down. Guy had no insurance. Luckily Ive always had full coverage with uninsured motorist coverage. Guy recieved two tickets there. Car was totaled. I had a sore back for a week or two, but otherwise I was fine. 4th gens are very safe cars from my experience, no matter what the year.

4th gens are definatly extremely safe. I got into a really bad wreck a few weeks ago and the car was totaly destroyed, but i walked away from it. Passenger had a broken leg, but we figured out it was because he had his leg slightly on the dashboard. My next car is definatly going to be a 4th gen maxima, that accident put so much of my trust into these cars that i doubt i'll be getting anything else in a long time.
So, what does the crash test mean, really? The Pontiac Grand Am supposedly is HORRIBLE at side-impact crashes, and yet, no en-masse lawsuits have happened. Knew a friend who drove that car,got T-boned, and was good healthwise.
All the tests do is see whether the car is at least passably safe, and fourth-gens seem to be wayy better than the test gives credit for. Besides, I don't intend on finding out like that.

There are so many factors to consider in how a car will respond in an accident. The offset crash that the IIHS does is much more severe than the frontal tests that the NHTSA gives. As for side crashes, again it depends on the type of vehicle/object hitting the car and how fast the impact is. I believe the IIHS tests as if the car were hitting a solid wall, not a vehicle which is why many cars do so poorly. Overall, you can still compare between vehicles to determine which are safer than others.

I was hit by a lady turning left from behind a bus (to right in front of me) and was injured in this fashion... I had to have knee surgery to repair torn cartilage and synovial tissue...

therefore 97-99 drivers>95-96 drivers

HAHA, not really Mike. You'll have to be a better driver to avoid accidents in 95/96 Maximas. So far I have had zero fender benders during the times that I've owned a 3rd gen, a 4th gen, and another 4th gen which is the one I have now. The only thing I am hating big time are these dings in my door. Just picked up another one while parked at the employee parking lot at work.
