AC system removal

i am currently changing motor and trans, and my question is can i releave my AC system at home with inexpensive tools. i know i should have done this before the car was unmovable, but i just came up with the idea of removing the system for a very little improment in power and weight reduction. thanks

go to a shop that does a/c work and tell them you want to give them free freon, and maybe they'll let you borrow their evap tank. it's a propane like tank with a hose and valve. it's illegal to recover freon this way, but it's better than crackin a line open and lettin it out.
