Just trying to get some estimates, I would do it myself but I dont have any of my tools up at school and couldnt leave it on the side of the road so told AAA to drop it off at a shop in town. Im figuring parts and labor around 250-300 for a rebuilt one?

The alternators about 125-175 and labors about 2 hours at whatever they charge (which is funny cause it takes about 20 minutes).

$170 for the alternator at Autozone and it comes with a lifetime warranty. I can do the job in 45 minutes but that's because I've done it twice. 20 minutes is hard to believe but I've seen a 5spd swap done in 4 hours so anything's possible.

Tools needed:

14MM socket
one adjustable wrench

Did I forget anything else? There might be more.

20 minutes if you've already done it 20 times before or if your car doesn't have a/c (yeah I know, a/c is standard equip) I paid $125 for a defective re-man for the ole '99, had to take it back out and put in another one.

Oh and make sure the wierd shaped nut isn't ****-eyed when you tighten up the mounting bolt for it, or else your belt will squeak a little and you'll hear the bolt fall out a week later, lmao

Extra coolant b/c you are guaranteed to make a mess with the stuff as the fan shroud is taken off.

Check the stickys ... or buy a haynes ... The front belt is EZ, but the rear one isn't as easy.

well talked to the guy today wanted almost 400 too change it which is way overpriced considering could go to an autozone and get it done for 225. So going to get one shipped here along with some tools now just need to get it from the mechanic to my place.

should've cost you nothing. you have a '97 and it should've been under the alternator recall. I would've had AAA drop it off at the dealer. I think Nissan will reimburse you if you have the alternator replaced somewhere else.

I replaced my alternator for free b/c it was under the alternator recall for '97- early '98 Max's.

about the recall, does it matter if im not the original owner. I thought there was restrictions to who could get them.

The owner does not affect a vehicles eligibility for recall work.

Im reading the recall, is speaks about how the diode would fail resulting in fire or whatnot. In all essence though my alternator just died so proving to them and getting them to cover costs would be difficult due to the nature of the repair because I am not getting it replaced for safety reasons.

If your car's VIN is in the recall range, they'll replace the alternator regardless of whether or not it is working, broken, or whatever. Just call the dealer, find out if your car is covered, and if it is, take it in and get a replacement alternator for free. Don't make it harder or more complicated than necessary.

just got mine done for $260 complete - and it ain't no autozone pos (if you use an autozone get used to changing the alternator every year, this already burned through 2 so decided to get a quality one, with a parts & labor warranty)

Since they are rebuild its just going to depend. Most of the time remaned stuff fixes the immediate problem with out looking into if there is a long term problem. Its luck of the draw.

Well that is a story by itself, but a few years ago I was working in Hunts Point (yeah there was a special on HBO) and I found an auto electrician that is top notch.
Hipolito's
631 Tiffany St
Bronx NY, 10474
(718) 991-7044

The owner & head mechanic is Hipolito - "specializes in alternators, starter & electrical systems for trucks & cars"

Most of the guys are hispanic so if you call just relax and the will put on a person that speaks english. It is sort of a rough neighborhood - but if you don't mind that their work is top notch. He has traced out electrical faults in my car and has found some along the way that would have become problems. I couldn't give them enough praise if I tried!

When my alternator died I went to the dealer where i bought the car and they charged 280 bucks or so if i remember correctly and they installed an alternator that they found at napa.
And then I found the whole ordel about the alternator recall so I called them up and they refunded me. So I got an OEM Alternator for free

well was able to get the car back from the mechanic jumped it and the battery had enough to get me back to my apt. Made a phone call or 2 and was able to pick up a rebuilt for 100 and with that having the tools needed shipped up to me at school from my home along with my haynes manual so going to change it in the parking lot. Thanks for all the info about the recall but the cost of getting my car to a near by dealer would have been a large tow cost so the 100 for the new alternator shipped isnt a bad route.
