dude.. dont be stupid.. you have a chance to get a car thats 3 years newer, and to learn from your mistakes with the other one.. take the i30, tint the windows, and keep it clean. case closed. the max you have, and mine, is never going to stop giving you headaches. im telling you down the road if you keep the max your gonna kick yourself in the -ss.. ive sunk a few thousand into this car that i only had for 2 years now.. you think your probelms are gonna go away?? plus.. in the rare case you decide down the road you dont like it, you can sell that too.. its worth more.. screw the little attachment you have with your old car.. you have to make the better decesion.. unless you wanna watch all your money going into a car that will never drive the way it did.

alright, i'm going to post my opinion since i'm not biased here....

I think that you should keep the maxima...plain and clear....reason #1 is because you know that you already replaced many of the parts that went bad, so they should last a fairly long time, unlike the i30 with all it's original parts...#2 it will have fresh paint and will be resistant to rust a lot longer than the i30 will (it's bound to rust some time)....#3 like you mentioned, it's a lot more fun to drive the the i30 (5-speed)

and whoever thinks that saying 'i drive an infiniti' makes a difference needs help....if you need that statment to get others to like you, you need to talk to different people....i don't give a crap if somebody drives a yugo with a gas pedal as it's only option, cuz i'm not materialistic like that....you shouldn't need stuff like that (ie: brand name clothes, high-stature car make, etc.) to make you happy....my .02...

never said i needed it to make me happy. the fact of the matter is that the I30 is worth more and was paid for with more money when it was new. i get more satisfaction out of saying yeah i bought this Infiniti rather than i bought this Nissan. I never said i get my jollies off by saying that. and dont even start your whole life is based on your status and everything. you know you would be proud as hell to say u drive a mercedes vs oh i drive a honda. the I30 will keep its value longer and is a nicer car overall

to me...(no offense to all the 4th gen owners)...

nissan maxima...it sounds like a family car..or a grocery getter...

but an Infiniti I30...sounds a whole lot better.

as for the rust problem on an i30...my car is ten years old...frequents the beach and has not seen any rust on the body...

reliability...i have seen nothing wrong with it...and i drive it like i stole it.

if you could use the extra money, sell the infiniti. that's probably what i would do as long as you know the maxima will last you however many years it needs to last you. if it has problems then that's a different story.

I really hope you don't feed into some of the -really- biased opinions on here. Wow. An Infiniti. Sorry, but you paid more for the name than anything. I can't believe some of you are actually telling him to keep the Infiniti for the "satisfaction" of owning an Infiniti. For those who don't think it's a status thing, you're full of it. I would get more satisfaction out of the modded Maxima, than an AUTO stock I30.
And along with the mileage argument that's already been stated (I have too), what's 3 years to a Maxima? With a totally redone exterior, it will look way newer than you're I30. And you're also trying to tell me that a lowered Maxima will look more like a grocery getter than a stock auto I30? Come on, no one's getting "pwned" here.
The ONLY reason for switching to an I30, is if your family owned an I30-Touring 5 speed, with the LSD. Other than "softer leather" or "an auto dimming mirror", you're not getting a different car. Those options can be swapped into your grocery getter if you so please. Man I can't believe more people haven't chimed in. Again, auto vs. 5 speed, and until the original poster says he's willing to swap tranny's, this should be the end of the argument.

how much roughly would it cost to swap the tranny's? and would it even be worth it? I mean, who is going to buy a modded auto maxima? a manual yes, but not an auto. It'll be hard enough selling a modded maxima as it is.

would you rather say u own a jaguar or a ford, its the same thing. its comparing apples to oranges. i would rather say i have a g35 over a 350z or a maxima ne day of the week. maybe it is a status thing but hey if it gets the ladies who the hell cares? if he took the mods off the max and put them on the I30 i would think that would be the best bet. and then take the money from selling the maxima and start saving for a better car because his max is alot older and has more mileage...its just going to depreciate more and more, more so than the i30. i know that this is going to stir up some trouble but i think my I30 looks better than alot of the maximas on here, and i think most of the I30 drivers would think tha same. its more rare to have a hooked up I30 and the bling factor is still there. for a college student the auto is the way to go. next thing u know his trans bearings will go bad and he will have to sink more money into that car.

some of the people in this thread seem to forget the fact that performance parts are interchangeable between 1st gen i30's and 4th gen maximas....

seriously...it would not take him any more than one day to swap the ypipe catback and suspension parts.so stop talking about modded maxima is better than a stock i30...

and to add to that too:

a stock i30 has standard equipment that many 95 maximas dont come with.
he lives in canada...meaning he'll probably love the seat warmers.and the heated side mirrors are a good thing to have in those cold mornings.

and since cars arent the only thing that matter in the world he could use the extra hand(because he chose to go with the i30) to do the following:

hold his girlfriend's hand

eat fries, burgers, etc...

scratch various areas of his body...

hehe...sorry got carried away...

anyways...mikee...these ppl are thinking we are just saying this because of BIAS...thats total BS dude...they're telling u to keep something that has had problems in the past and has current body problems over a perfectly working car!

not to mention its in mint condition.

i drive countless maximas a day and i'll tell you right now...hands down...that an i30 is still a keeper for me.

the only problem my car has given me was a knock sensor.non-heating cig lighter....thats it...nothing else has gone wrong on the car that cant be blamed on me.the car has over 80k miles and sees everyday stop and go driving, hard accelerations, cold starts, been in 3 accidents, and one robbery...tell me that this car doesnt last.

BIAS my a$$.they're telling u to keep something thats gonna be worth less and has constant problems and flaws?over a car with more mileage and minor modifications?

my i30 is not in mint or perfect condition but it still turns heads.

I have a I30t 5 speed...I guees I have a rare car
yes you do.i still havent been able to find one.

I'd rather say I owned a jaguar or a g35 instead of a 350z or Maxima in front of immature idiots who get a chubby over irrelevant stuff I guess. Only an immature boob would think about what the "ladies" will think about driving an Infinity. Who gives a **** what materialistic women think about what people drive.

If I was on the road and saw a modded 5spd Maxima it would create more envy than seeing a nice stock 98 I30 auto. If he's looking at resale value the I30 would be the way to go. If he's after the fun factor then the Maxima wins. If he keeps the I30 he'll have some modding to do. If he can even swap over all his Max mods then all the better. If he keeps the Maxima, not so much modding needed. If he can sell the I30 and keep the cash for himself to use on the Maxima then I'd do that. If he has to sell the Maxima in order to keep the I30 then I'd probably do that if it were me. What are the colors of each car?

Are his parents giving him the I30 with the understanding that he sells the Max and gives the $ to them? (he's actually buying it from them) Or are they actually GIVING him the car to do with as he pleases? This makes a big difference in teh advice he's given imho.

I honestly don't give a crap what he does. The I30 is a great car because it's based on the Maxima, not the other way around. He'll have a great car no matter what choice he makes.

what makes you say that the maxima is based on the cefiro??when the i30 is based on the cefiro which started the same year as the 4th gen maxima. Just because they're both A32 doesnt mean that the infiniti i30 is based on the maxima. When in other countries there arent even maximas but i30s with nissan badges on them.there's a cefiro line and a maxima...two different things, mechanically similar but they're two different things.

Not so much modding??he still has much to go...what'll a 5spd get with ypipe and catback...170-180 to the wheels? there are cars out there that'll spank that 5spd...nobody should keep a car just because its already modded...a problematic car is just that...a problematic car.why go for a car that wont eat your money away with repairs instead of being able to just start gunning for the mods?

how many i30s have you seen going down the road with mods??probably 1(or less) I myself drive a modded i30 and i can tell that people do look.

Only an immature boob would think about what the "ladies" will think about driving an Infinity. Who gives a **** what materialistic women think about what people drive.
Immature boob??you're thinking of keeping a car because of its fun factor instead of reliability.think wise with your investments-sell the maxima, pocket the money and take care of that i30, it'll last you.

340 bucks will give a better looking front end and you'll get a car that'll keep up with newer cars aesthetics-wise.

*swap over the suspension mods and exhaust and you're good to go.you could probably weasel your way with getting a tranny sway done by your local tranny place for about 1.5k but why would you swap over a problematic
transmission?

The Max has 118066 miles, while the i30 has 105638 miles. Not a HUGE difference. I think it's much easier to swap the things that make an i30 an i30, than it is to swap trannies.

i like my I30 better because of its rarity in modding. notice how there is like 20,000 members on this board. only like 100 have I30's....you cant make a max look like a cefiro but your damn straight when i drive by my car turns heads. because its different and thats y people like it. i dont care if a materialistic girl wants me for my car. im 20 years old, i dont want a relationship ne way, its all about goin out and havin fun.

This is just a pissing contest, and we obviously think what we want to think. I'm tired of arguing, and to be honest, I don't think anyone here pulling for the I30 made really good points. I would much rather see this thread die, or have the original poster tell us what he wants. I don't think I've seen a post from him again in this thread...maybe that should tell US something.
But whatever, you guys think the I30 for your reasons, I think keeping the Maxima would be better. We still don't know the condition of the I30 well enough to make a judgement call, and saying the 95 Maxima is problematic might not be fair as well.
I would still love a 5 speed over an auto, and yes, I have driven both, and it makes a world of difference in the cars. I'll say it again, until the original poster says that he is willing to swap trannies, I'm voting for the Maxima. "It is much easier to convert a Maxima to have the conveniences of an I30, than it is to swap trannies" -- great line.
Since when does having an auto in college mean anything? I don't get that point. And if you can't drive a standard and do all those things that cefiro is talking about, then maybe a little more practice is in order for the manual tranny owners out there. I know I can still be competent behind the wheel and do all that stuff, and shift gears.
I'm done, say what you will, and I'm gonna do my best to not even open up this thread unless I see that the original poster has replied.

you dont think that taking a car in mint condition is better than taking a car with more mileage(though not much) and has dings and rust?

some of these guys are in denial...im not neccessarily rooting for the i30...but it IS the better choice in this case.

i30 will have lower insurance rates because idiot kids don't drive them around like race cars and crack 'em up left and right. call your insurance company for quotes. you'll see what i mean. the i30 also has stuff like side air bags.

OK, I couldn't help it, but he said very clearly that there will be about 1500 dollars worth of body work done on the car, even if he sells it or keeps it. He will be spending that money anyways, so the body will be in mint condition. Who knows what kind of condition the I30 is in - perhaps it's never been waxed, and has many swirl marks? The maxima is going to look brand new!!!
I see where you're coming from IF he wasn't planning on doing that body work EITHER WAY. The choice is obvious then. But since his car will have many new parts, and a whole load of body work done to make it look new again, I think selling the I30 is the best route. Please go back and read it.

So, my friends dad is giving me an amazing deal on body work and paint. Im getting all the body work done (rust and everything) and a new paint job (standard paint, not maaco garbage) for $1500 cash. The guy does awesome work, so its going to look great.

Now I'm unsure which car I should keep. The maxima or the infiniti (which is in mint condition and has had no problems). The i30 is worth more, but the maxima is so much more fun to drive.
These statements are what I'm basing my suggestions over. You seem to have misread the original post to begin with.

What makes you think the Maxima is going to break? It has been maintained and replacement parts installed. If anything is going to break, it will be the Infiniti in due course.

what course is that?i've never seen anyone in the i30 forums going...IM LOSING MY CAR!! or IS THIS IT? or WHY ISNT IT STARTING!

stop thinking Infiniti's are pieces of crap.

how are you so sure that maxima's are more reliable than i30s?

he isn't saying that at all....he's saying that THIS i30 will be more likely to have problems in the future than THIS max becuase it's running on all the original parts, while the max has many new parts...

That aside, this is the most pathetic excuse for an argument i've ever seen in my entire life....they are the SAME CAR!!!!! how do the i30 people not see that?? The guy clearly stated that most everything on the max that can break has already been replaced PLUS he is getting practically a new body....i don't give a **** if i had to choose between that and a BMW, i would take that any day! And how can you possibly say that the i30 is more reliable? Yes, this particular one has had less problems than this particular max in the PAST, but you have to understand that this means the i30 is running on all it's original parts, and the max is essentially new, so it would seem like the max would outlast the i30, simply because of this fact....now by no means am i saying "Infiniti's are pieces of crap" because i LOVE infiniti; as a matter of fact, my next car will most likely be an infiniti, but between these two cars, the case is simple, and he should keep the max...

Reasons for keeping the max:
1. Mostly new parts
2. New body
3. 5-speed (fun to drive, and better gas mileage)

Reasons for keeping the i30:
1. More options

stop thinking Infiniti's are pieces of crap.

how are you so sure that maxima's are more reliable than i30s?
Show me exactly where anyone of us says "Infiniti's are pieces of crap". What thread have you been reading??? Honestly, you missed the WHOLE ENTIRE PART explaining that the Maxima's body will be perfect after the body work that will be done regardless of selling it or not. It took you three pages of replies to get that point. Now you are reading too far into things.

Why would we flat out say I30's aren't reliable? Hello? We've been saying that the I30 and Maxima are mechanically the same car. If one's not reliable in the aspects your citing, then the other car will follow suit. Plain and simple.

I can't believe you are still trying to argue for a stock I30 auto, with all original parts against a soon-to-be-mint 95 modded 5 speed. I keep wanting to stay away, but this thread pulls me back in.

I am glad to see that I have some supporters. I too like Infinitis and my next car may likely be one, but not a brand new one that is for sure.

The Infiniti is now 8 years old, has been subjected to Ontario winters, has had little in the way of maintenance problems and will be due for money being spent on it in due course. That is all I am saying!

The mileage differential between the two vehicles is nothing in the scheme of things and, in fact, on an annualized basis the Maxima has had fewer miles per year put on it than the Infiniti, ie. 20,000 km more and 3 years older.

If the owner wasn't a student, I would advocate strongly that perhaps he sell both vehicles and buy a low-mileage 2003 Maxima 6-speed and a winter beater.

Selling the Infiniti will solidy his cash flow, allow whatever necessary maintenance remains on the Maxima to be done and provide some cash for repairs down the road and perhaps an occasional night out as an escape from studying.

There was going to be a quiz on this thread on Tuesday and you failed, kcryan!

Kidding aside, your suggestion has been mentioned a few times already and obviously has merit.

I'd sell them both and buy something else, unless you really need a FWD Sedan.

Neither car is worth dumping large amounts of money into.

From Consumer Guide regarding the I30:
Nissan's luxury division introduced this new sedan as an early '96 model. The front-drive 4-door I30 was based on the design used for the Nissan Maxima. Both rode a 106.3-inch wheelbase. At 189.6 inches overall, the I30 was two inches longer than a Maxima. Exterior styling was the foremost difference between the two, with the I30 wearing a more formal-looking body. Both the I30 and Maxima used the same 190-horsepower, 3.0-liter V6 engine with dual camshafts. A 5-speed manual transmission was standard and 4-speed automatic optional. Suspensions, components, and interiors also were shared. Standard I30 features included dual airbags and antilock brakes.
Anyway, doesn't really matter. Both are nice cars and both will make him happy I think. The fact that it's an I30t and not a plainer I30 leans to it's favor though. But a five spd at age 21 sounds much more fun.

He still hasn't provided enough info to make a complete opinion on it though.

ok well first off i agree with 5 speed being more fun but i think he wants a reliable car. maxima/I30 5 spd trannies are JUNK next thing you know ur trans is makin noise and u need to replace the bearings. the reason why i referred to being in college is because most college students dont have money to throw around like crazy. if u wanted a sporty car then u go out and u buy a sporty car a maxima/i30 is a sedan its not meant to handle insane or be beat on like its a race car. Its a 4 door sedan. put it drive and go use it for transportation to get back and forth to work and school for now that should be ur main priority right now and then u can get ur body work done and sell ur car and have extra $$ in your pocket. and im not knocking those who try to make their car faster and what not but most of the time with big mods to make ur car fast u loose reliability i guess thats why my dads I30 has 257k on the clock and is still on the original tranny only thing that has gone wrong was the alternator which was recalled and basic maintence, one knock sensor and a front back o2 sensor. and he doesnt drive like a grandpa by any means.

We absolutely cannot make a judgement based on what he said. To be honest, I don't think he's been on the .org since he made this thread. If the tranny was replaced with a 97-01 tranny, then the diffy bearing problem shouldn't come out. Can we please just let the thread die, I said it before but I am really tired of arguing. You have your opinions, I (...we) have mine (...ours), but at the end of the day, this guy hasn't even responded; we are wasting our time now. Instead of making new valid points, all we are doing is rewording the old one's to sound new and convincing. Let's just let this die...
