Could this be the end ...

of my RE4F04A....

So, I think the time has come ...

When driving around with O/D on... RPM's go up under very light load (virtually no load at all) as if the O/D was off .... Second gear is horrible and essentially non-existent. Meaning, I floor it and the RPM's just go up as if in nuetral, and when driving under normal conditions, I get a severe slip/jump/lag whenever getting out of first into the next gear, which I believe is 2nd being dead, and it going into 3rd after some time (5-10 seconds when letting of accelerator). ....

I was originally going to sell my swap parts but ... Maybe it be smarter to hold onto them after this realization...

www.car-part.com has been latery, and not selling anything less than $500 w/o freight.

No point to this thread but the curing of boredom, and hopefully someone will chime in with some good information.....

Your transmission is hosed. Same thing happened to mine. Just out of curiosity check the condition of the fluid. Mine looked like burnt motor oil right before I put a new one in. Id say you have about 3 weeks left of transmission life left depending on how much you drive day to day.

First I lost 2nd and OD, then about 3 weeks later 3rd started to slip badly.

I do about 200 miles / week (50/day/4xwk)

It started happening on my last road trip this past weekend(~630 miles round trip)

BTW, where/why did you go with another auto? How much?

Mileage currently is 232.6k... and the fluid isn't all that bad.

Time for the 5-speed swap. Give that autotragic the hook and leave the dark side behind!

I bought it out of Dallas, TX, 60,000 miles on it, free shipping to Austin, $433 with tax, $500 installed by StephenMax, $400 for Maximum Tuning Stage II Valvebody. Total $1,333.

As for why.....I didnt have another $1,000 to throw at a 5 speed swap

Yes, darkside soon... I have

-Control rod & support rod
-Shift console trim/boot
-Slave cylinder
-SS clutch line
-Manual trans mount

I was originally going to sell these in exchange for $$ for a TS ECU for my 5.5g.. but seems as if that may not happen ...

236k on the original transmission right? That's impressive.

Whether or not you do the 5-spd swap depends on how long you intend to keep the car. Obviously swapping in another auto-tranny is the easiest way to go. A 5-spd swap is involved (no matter what anyone says about how easy it is). I've seen one done and helped. It's not rocket science, but there are lots of things to do and lots of little problems that can surface (intermittent) after the work is complete. I don't think the effort involved is worth it if you don't intend to drive the car for at least 3-4 more years... but thats just me. If I wanted a 5-spd that badly, I would just sell my GLE and get a 5-spd Maxima.

The conversion cost is also a big factor... IMHO, it doesn't make sense to drop 1500 bucks (minimum) into a 5-spd swap when you can get a working auto tranny and slap it in for 500-700 bucks.

Just my $0.02.

njmodi has a point. How would you rate the overall condition of you 4th Gen and assuming you had a functioning tranny, be it autotragic or manual, how long do you anticipate driving it for, ie. to what mileage.

It strikes me that you have cut back on the 4th Gen mileage in the last 6 months or so. Is that a fair assessment?

Why did you use the 4th Gen for your recent road trip? Does it get much better mileage than the 5.5 Gen?

I already have another Max .... but this has become my daily driver, and yeah I could get a POS for ~2k, but I'd rather have a 5MT with--> MEVI/ECU/Y than some tercel ...

Auto has become boring .... I have 2 of them you know .... I think the 5MT is what I'm going to do, since I already have a few misc parts for it.

I intend on driving it until the doors come off, and when tehy do, I'll put new ones on.

It is, but that's only because I do have a healthy 3.5L to drive on the weekends and other times when I feel it necessary. So in the past year, I'd say the mileage has dropped by ~ 1/2, and it makes sense since I do have another car.

low miles.. I think you better drive like crazy and roll over 999,999 and then you can tell Bobo how you only have 10 miles on your Max

Speaking of low miles, If I had bought my wife's car new back in 1999, she would have had < 20,000 miles on it as of this morning

She wants a motorbike or a Vespa but it becomes a problem in Chicago winters... of course, I'm not sure how you attach a car-seat to a Vespa

I do tend to drive alot ... 200 miles /week, if no OT, and possibly a 630 mile weekend trip per month.

You need to talk to BlackBIRDVQ for that He did the tranny swap and a bunch of us did the interior/shifter work.

Yup - thats why I said I can help... I worked with Nismo3112 on the shifter/clutch pedal/slave cylinder. I helped lift the manual transmission into place (if that counts). heh heh.
