hacked airbox question

for those of you with HAB mods....

since our air filters are exposed the way they are does that mean we need to change our filters more frequently?or is it the same?

mine looked like **** before i hacked it, doesnt look much dirtier now. I doubt it has a profound effect unless you have a dirty *** engine bay. just spray it (the bay) clean once in a while and there wont be any reason for it to be dirtier

I remember reading that it shouldn't get any dirtier, but I have yet to check my K&N again since I did the ghetto air box.

Maybe you're looking at the top of the filter...take it out and look at the bottom? lol

Most likely because you drive more recklessly to hear it. I had my old airbox hacked, took it out though.

i noticed that too...i think the warmer air from the bay has something to do with...even before...whenever i took out the snorkel i would get worse gas mileage....

When I had my cone air filter on there I would push the gas pedal down more for take offs since there was no low end power...maybe something to do with that on your end?

lol! Removing the snorkel or hacking it isnt gonna cause a NOTICABLE loss in mileage, just like hacking it wont cause a NOTICABLE gain/loss in power anywhere on the band, just because the 1.5 low end you might lose isnt butt dynoable, and the 1.5 you might gain high end isnt butt dynoable. Its for the sound. Ive always gotten ****ty mileage, probably because im 16 and drive my car like it should be driven (or I think it should anyway....) But the HAI made no noticable difference in mileage.

I just have the snorkel removed with a K&N panel filter. I love the sound so much, I floor it all the time, especially for accelerating in 2nd gear. MPG probably suffers, I get around 24 or so mixed city/highway. I love the sweet growl, especially after I put my Ypipe on. What's the point of having power if you don't use it?

Removing the snorkel will get you the same sound without maiming your airbox, but the snorkel actually helps you in that its really not that restrictive, and manages to bring somewhat cooler air to the box.

I have had mine hacked for 2 years and my K&N is still spotless (I did clean it 6 months ago, but it wasnt even dirty then.)

Out of curiousity, those who removed their snorkel, what did you do about the air temperature sensor attached to it?

i hacked the side and left the snorkel so i can get somewhat cold air in, love the growl but now that i think of it i regret dremeling a huge triangular hole into the side of my airbox.

i built a harnes for my filter, and completely removed the bottom section of the air box. It took about 1.5 hours to do, but is was not difficult. I used a hanger, and I check to make sure it is still on about every other day, but it looks solid, and it has not budged. I am thinkig of fabricating one that will be able to stand a bit more abuse, but so far, every thing is all good
