This is self explanitory....one look at the '95-'96 steering wheel will answer all questions at so why I started this thread.
How do you change the wheel? I saw someone do a swap with an '02 altima wheel.....so, with a 1997 Max wheel, I would imagine it would be easier, right?

yes its possible and you can swap to any kind of wheel you want. i myslef got me a momo. another member has a altime wheel. i used to have a 2k max wheel and a 2k2 max wheels that was heated. the only problem is the airbags can be sometimes expensive.
There's never a day when something's not on sale
I've been wanting to change mine as well.... what was Nissan thinking?????????
I was planning on doing the 97-99 wheel because it seems to be the cheapest route, but who knows what I'll actually end up doing once I get money...

my leather is coming off... but a couple questions:
how would the wiring hook up to the airbag be? what about those with cruise control? would it just hook up the same?

so can u make it functional then? i dont see why not but then again i wouldnt want to splice somthing and make the damn airbag go off in my face in the middle of driving

airbags normally wont deploy like that. Normally there are 2 crash sensors well aleast 2 somewhere on the car and they make the decision to deploy or not. If your swaping out your steering wheel the best/easiest way i see is to go aftermarket and get one w/o the airbag. Of course you have to realize that you will loose the cruise control function as well. And i'm not sure about the airbag light being on but it would be on if you disconnect it. I dont think there is a real simple way of doing it. the guy with the alitma wheel must of put a lot of work into getting the wheel on. If i remember correctly he also has the audio buttons functional as well as the crusie stuff.

i wouldnt only swap if the airbag was still functional. i saw what happened to my friend in a semi-minor accident when his airbag didnt deploy.
i was thinking about buying some leather a different color from stock from leatherseats.com and sewing it on myself, since they sell the "skins".

Isint it a matter of plug and play? I have cruise control and an airbag, so , since a '97 would have the same features, wouldn't it be just a matter of plug and play? What makes a '97 airbag not work where a '95 would?
BTW, aren't you supposed to change the airbags every 8-10 years anyways?

Does someone have a picture of the 95-96 steering wheel? I can't find one anywhere.

These are the closest ones I have from my cars on the computer. The wheel is kind of thin compared to the 97/99s but it doesnt really bother me. I put a cover on the black one and it looks just fine to me, not worth the money to make it look a little better. The tan interior has a cover on it too but thats from the previous owner.
when i did the swap, i wasnt thinking about the airbag because i have my own opinion about them. you dont need any special tools to remove the steering wheel but a steerring wheel puller would get the job done alot easier. splicing isnt hard to do as long as you match all the wiring up and you need nissan wiring diagrams to do that.
So the airbag CAN be wired up without major hassle? My cruise control doesnt even work right now, so im not worried about losing that, but yeah, an airbag is definately worth having unless your running a 5 point harness and have NO chance of getting near the wheel!
i am buying a 97 wheel most likely next week. I was wondering also how hard this swap would be.
Apparently according to my friend (im buying the wheel from him) you will need some type of special tool to get the wheel off.
I may just have to give it a shot and do stuff as I go along.

like i said a steering wheel puller. the steerign wheel itself is bolted with a 17 or a 199 mm nut in the middle. once you remove that net, you need to pull the wheel off the splines that are on the collum. if you are strong enough you can yank it off but like i said the puller will make it easier.
i can see it now. braced up against the firewall, seat far back, yanking with all your might POP! ouch my face hurts cuz i just hit it with a steering wheel. buy/rent the tool lol! better safe than bleeding lip and loose teeth!
